" I recovered a fte r t he inj uri es in about fo ur month s and I did n't ma ke because of it ," Ha rry Dayton a Pierce kep t on continue s. to Ron enco uragi ng me, saying ' Well , Har ry , yo u know, do n't th ink that you 're gonna be no good an y mo re, j us t keep o n saying th at yo u 're go nna be good.' So I we nt o ut and rode Willow Springs and Orange Coun ty, and I finished reaso na bly good . Th en I sat do wn and said ' Well , I'm gonna have to go faster if I'm gonna win Ro ad Atlanta.' So when Oran ge Co un ty came up and I saw Pat Evans an d every b od y I said ' I'm going to really try hard.' I take off and I was leading the ra ce , waiting for everybody to pass m e. Nobody passed me, and I j ust found myself going a lot faster than I eve r did before . Ever since that da y on I felt t hat I co uld go out and win a race." Harry didn't win th at day, (Evans drafted to pass on the last lap ), but his spirit was ba ck . "After Ontario when me and Endicott and Pierce we re going, Ro n reall y j ust ju mped up in the air an d said ' Harry, I'll do wh atever you nee d . J ust leave it all up to me and I' ll get it do ne for yo u. ' He gets me tires and free discs and every th ing, an d he 's bee n h elp ing me o ut qu it e a bit. l o we it all to h im . " Har ry 's parents figure in his success, too. " My l\lom see ms to like it (racing) pretty mu ch bu t she doesn't like th e exp en ses invo lved . Th at's the o nly th ing she j ust argues abo ut every nigh t wi th my Dad , and my Dad see ms to han g in the re fo r me. li e see ms to be sponsoring migh ty go od, an d I app recia te it . They'll be gelling it bac k, to o , once I start winning fo r t hem. I'm j ust go ing to give them all the p rize money . Th at's all the re is to it . I mean, all the bikes are my Dad's. I'm jus t maintainan cing (sic) th em . I don' t do any th ing else. I' m really glad for wh at he 's doing." But in sp ite of bei ng " rea lly enthuse d abo ut everything" lately , Harr y st ill feels the effects of the Oran ge Coun ty crash . "1\ly ankle swe lls up into a b ig ba lloon after every race and I can 't wal k the whole n igh t long un til the mo rning whe n it swells dow n. I've go t a cyst on my ankle still, and it doesn 't see m to be going away right no w. It 's sitting o n the crac k, and I' m go nna still have problem s with it . In the middl e of a race it te nds to j ust he at up and then I can 't feel any thing any more , and I just move my knee : I can 't move my foot anymo re . In fact, I never U~ the fear brake any more. You co uld take my bra kes o ut right now - I' ll never use th em. If it had been my other o ne , I probably wouldn 't be ab le to shift a fte r half a race." In spi te of the po ssib ilit y o f a Kawasaki factory ride fo r th e Laguna Seca Nov ice race, lIarry reports th at Pier ce has advised hi m to ride his Yamaha to win the race, then talk wi th po tential spo nsors. " Ron is go nna reb uild my whole b ike for Laguna Seca , and he guarantees me I'm gon na win. li e sa id no mailer wh at , he 's gonna get the mo tor, and he's go nna do it , and he 's gonna sponsor me all o u t and I'm go nna win . And I said ' Well, I' ll give it a t ry .' lI e's rea lly been encouragi ng me and with t hese last co uple of races I've been fin ishing pre t t y good so I figure mayb e I might have a good cha nc e in th e race. I' ll j us t wai t un til th e day hap pen s, I guess." As for h is lat est cras h, caused when the the rmo stat of his T Z 350 fell out an d co ve red the rea r end with \Il..a t e r, lIarr y does n't th ink it slowed him d o wn . "I'm read y to go.
