J ust a short b reather, and then ca me the six lap Open Classic. lt was tho ugh t th at Mike Hailwood's lap re co rd would fall this y ear sin ce it had been set in 1967 ! Mick Grant was favo red to brea k it , and from a st anding start o n the 75 0 Kawasaki Mick sho we d h e was cap abl e. His op en ing lap beat Peter Williams' 750 lap record fo r the ci rc uit , an d a ft er j ust 3 7 and three-quarter m ile s he had ope ned a 28 seconds lea d o ver J ohn Williams in second pl ac e . Bu t he was just a second ahead of Tony Ru tte r. Gr an t smashed the reco rd with his second lap d espi te the odd mi sta ke aro u nd th e circuit, a wheelie for the benefit and pleasure o f h is signaller at th e Goo sen ec k, an d slowing down for h is pit st op! The rec o rd was no w 10 9 .8 2 mph . But Grant di dn't race o n for much longer. Three hundred yards aft er th e Go ose nec k on lap th ree , where he sa w he led b y over 4 0 sec o n ds h is ch ain snapped . That left J ohn Williams a nd T ony Ru tter to fight it ou t. Rutte r had p u t in a lap at 10 6.63 on lap two to m ove into second pl ace, but Williams , also m ounted o n a 350 Yamaha m o ved ah ead, a lap later . On the fou rth lap Ru t t er was still tryin g h ard. He lap ped at 107 .88 mph , th e fastest lap ever by a 350, a nd m ove d back ahead of Will iams. Bu t at Ballu gh o n th e fif th lap , Rutte r's chain bro ke, and the race was on a pl a te fo r J o hn William s. J ohn crossed the line almost fo ur minu tes ahead of second plac e Percy Tait, This pop ular veteran had disc overed the steering damper b roken as he went to the start line, b u t he decided t o race on. His bravery was rewarded ! Un lucky Ken Hu ggett lost his third place on the fin al lap when h is Yamaha seized so lid in the Glen Helen sectio n. He was rushed t o the hospital by helicopter where doctors we re attem p ting to save his leg. His acci d en t let Charlie San by (75 0 Suz uki ) in to third place . It was his first ra ce o f the year! Most of t he top 10 leaderb oard m en were o n 350 Yam ah as, b ut one o f the big bike heroes of the race was German Hel mu t Dahne who fo ug h t his b ucking BMW into n inth p lace .
