Sonny , co ming fro m the number three starting slot. t ried to square off the co mer quickly , got a wheel underneath but h ad th e door slam med on him. It loo ked li ke the typical Bast te arn riding. That 's wh en Dubb and Sonny m ade an unofficial link. too, an d went a fter them. It set off the crowd and when Du b b got into sec ond they were primed to cheer. Suddenly, Nu tter m oved into third and here ca me Dubb fighting fo r the lead ! Final tum, out they came. and Ferrell m atch ed th e victory while Nutter weaved in to second. J eff Sex ton an d Bru ce Penhall also made the Scratch Main program. So nny Nutter quickly p icked o ff the lead an d Penhall, o n th e ou tside , tried to peck away at it, b ut co u ld n 't de nt t he Sonny ride. The Handicap Main had some new blood again up fr o nt, thi s time Mark Cherf, who hung in fro m th e 10. Bobby Sch wartz. wh o is beginning to look tough again, closed in for second with Steve Bast sligh tly edg ing out Nu tter. tum three . Becker drove down towards th e pole. Rick, with no place to go , centerpun ched hi m an d th ey both went down. So nny too k over the lead hold ing off the rush of Bill Cody , while Becker and Woods stood in the infield loo king on. Cody was n o t too d isappointed, because he had already won the Handicap Main and the Feat ur e Match Race against Dubb Ferrell. Irwin Moo n, th e FIying Grandfather, once told me that he took up motorcycle racing so he co uld spend more ti me with his sons, Larry. Phil and Rick. Larry and Ph il are Speedway stars
