Super ro okie Jay Springsteen once
again turned the tables on everyone in sight as he sped the Team
Vista Sheen Harley-Davidson to
victory in the AMA Grand National Championship Camel
Pro
Serie s/ILC Cycle Classic half mile.
It was the second victory in as
many weeks fo r th e Flint,
Michigan native.

Following "The Springer" to the
checkers were Harley te amsters Rex
Beauchamp and Gary Scott. Yamah a's
Kenny Roberts finish fourth with
Harley riding Doug Sehl taking the fifth
position.
Highligh ting the race, along with the
devastating presence of Springsteen, was
the swap in the top position in National
point standings. Gary Scott, on the bas is
of his third place finish, eased Kenny
Roberts out of his top position by the
very slim margin of five points. Jay's
dual victories have vaul ted him from
near the bottom of the standings two
weeks ago to ninth going into
Harrington and third coming out of the
Delaware State Fairgrounds event.
Rookie victories are not that
surprising although in past seasons most
have come near the close of the season
rather than so early in the run ning. The
feat of winning back to back Nationals
by a ro o kie was last accomplished by
Brad Andres in 1955. Andres' wins were
both road races and this is the first time
that a rookie has been able to do the
double trick on dirt.
The Harringto n half-mile turned out
to be a close copy of Louisville; at least
until practice began. The crushed
limestone track, which featured long
straights connected with sharp comers,
is normally use d later in the season after
it has been conditioned by the endless
pounding of the horses who practice
and race there. It looked great, but the
dust that started in practice didn't settle
fully until the noise of the last engine
had died away an d the crowds had gone
home.
A slim field of less than 60 riders
turned out to do battle at Harrington
and when time trials were finished five
