NorCal Speedway MacMurray one; Carter one By W. H. Spencer SAN .lOSE, CAL. , MAY 22 Ren o 's Rich Macl\lurray copped th e feature Scratch Main at San Jose and took a double header away from Ge orge Carter in the process. George had j ust finished rebuilding his motor and copped the Handicap Main from th e 30 yard line with John Van ce holding MacMurray to third. The Scratch Main was indeed a thriller as Car ter led the first o f four laps with MacMurray and Norm Denny side by side down th e straights. On th e second lap MacMurray rode up and under Carter to ta ke th e lead and th e win while Denny just co uldn't get his act together for the pass. In th e five lap Handicap Gary Miller came o ff the zero to h old o ff the frei ght train effec t fo r a lap wit h Car ter takin g th e lead on th e seco nd lap fro m t he 30 and holding it . Dale St etler took th e Scratch Handicap whil e Ken Eggers cras h ed and hurt his foot. Eggers h ad just done a masterful job in winning th e Handicap Consolation o ver St etler whil e J erry "Kamikazc" Bowers did his usual crash number on the last lap of that even t, Long, lanky Matt Jackso n will p ick up some yardage after an easy Division II win over newcomer Kirk Tardiff. Last week's winner Mike Faria finally figured out how to get his machine sideways but while leading, promptly laid it out on the ground much to the delight of the fans. • NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP MILE MacMurray and Cunningham top Cal Expo field By Sneaky Pete SAC RAMENTO, CAL., MAY 30 After finishing a very close second in last week's feature event, Rich MacMurray came backto win his first Scratch Main of the five week old season. Last week's winner Alan Christian finished second by about the same bike length distance he won last week. Third went to John Cunningham as Norman Denny watched from the infield as a result of a first lap spill. Displaying much the same skill that carried him to the high point title in 197 3 , John Cunningham came up from the 40 yard line to take Handicap Main ahead of Dennis Robinson and Alan Christian. Christian again leads in main event wins in the Handicap division with two, followed by Cunningham, MacMurray and Ron Long with one each . One event that has had a different winner eac h night for th e past five weeks is th e Division Two Main . Fast -improving John Cook started on ' th e zero and led start to finish ahead o f Dave Cooper and Bob Bellino. At the rate young Cook is progressing, th is ex motocrosser co uld be into the first division by season's end. Although big enough , but not old enough to ride with the big ' kids', Brian Thompson co ntinued his winning ways in the J unior part of th e program by scoring his th ird Junior Main fo llo wed by Eric Watts an d Jim Sizemore . The One Dollar Rip Off h as returned. Whil e th e Tracers an d Potters (?) , are do ing th eir thing on t ha t lo vely one mil e ova l here, speedway fans are ' being ta gged on e buck to park.
