With a second scoring first time ou t this was goo d enough fo r fir st overall. Perrish Anderson (Yam) just pl ayed it cool all night. Raines settled for fifth in moto two and was pushed down to fourth overa ll. Boy , that MacDannald (14 ) sure gets in a lot of p ictures, riding two classes. .J .J f= III Neil MacDannald swep t two classes wi th ease at Sandhill Ran ch to day. MacDannald rode a new 125 YZ monoshock to first in the 30 Pro class an d also cle aned up in the 25 0 Pro race o n hi s super-fast Noguchi. Mac Dannald sho t o ut into first at the start of th e first 125 moto ; he was never he aded again. Back in second spot, qu ite a race was sh aping up with Stu Busser t (Hon), Mike Amaral (Hon ) and David Ernst (Hon) . For seve ral laps Bussert led the p ac k with Amaral an d Ernst right behind p ushing h ard. It 100 ked like Amaral wo uld m ake his mo ve o n . Bussert, but started to dro p off the pace an d Dave Erns t took o ver. Ernst was now set on getting by Bussert, b ut droppe d out with b ike problems . It was later learned th at Amaral had hi s brake cable hang up on his bike somewhere an d it was cost ing him ti me in the turns. Moto two was a repeat pe rformance fo r MacD an nald. On ce again he go t th e hole sh ot an d the lead , an d neve r was chal lenged . The race for secon d was again with Bussert and Am aral. Bus sert had the advantage at th e start and Am aral was back in about fo urth. Within tw o to three lap s Amaral had closed the gap . This time Bussert fell victim to me chanical t roub les wit h a sick transmission. Neil MacDannald repeated his 125 victory , th is time in th e 250 Pro race. After t wo rest arts, due in part to j umpy rid ers , things got rolling with MacDannald pulling away on h is Nogu ch i. Following Neil was Bill Johnson (YZM) an d Curt Berggren (YZ) . Joh n son soo n dropped o ut wi th bi ke troubl es wh ich left Berggren to mind seco n d p lace. Chris Grewer (Hus) wo r kin g up from a poor start was closin g on Berggren. For several laps Gre wer was on Berggren's rear end, Berggren was smooth and Grewer was all ove r the track in his pursuit. Gre wer finally wen t by an d fin ished secon d. Berggren 's shoc k mo unt broke o ff bu t he still held on to fin ish th ird . Finding th e form ula to th e prove rb ial hole shot was once aga in Nei l MacD annald. Chris Grewer fo llowed in seco nd for the entire moto. Chris Grewer pic ked up second overall on h is new erratic Husky. Sprinklers were ad ded to the lo n g uphill to keep the d ust do wn and Tom of Sandhill Ranc h told of p lan s for sprinklers fo r the very dusty ba ck section of th e co urse. Winning the o nc hou r mini-marathon was I\like Springer o n a recently redone Honda. Mike led all but the middle th ree laps when J eff Bramlett got by after taking an unusually lo ng start. He subsequ en tly fell again but remained in second while Mike Kelly and Andre Albe dice d for the las t trophy spot. Tex Co llingwood led all but the first lap in lap p ing the en tire 125 field o n his YZ with Bob Fried lan d and his tri c ko Kaw asa ki the o nly other to stay close for th e tw o ho ur sho w. J im Sicso and Boyd Henderson had the early lap lead wh ile Pau l Glade was on his way to passing th e lo t o n th e second lap , th en lost pow er in hi s Red Line Ho nda four stroke and p arked it fo r the da y . Mik e Webb and Don Anderson ca me fro m a poor st arting 20 th to ta ke a we ll deserve d fou rth over Andy Russell and partner Sta n Manta wh o started 17 th . J ohn Silva sho we d up with a new Can -Am 250 and wiped up the clas s after Bob Vickery led o ut the first lap and parked it ear ly with faulty ignitio n pro b lems. Silva and new-fo und partne r Billy Risner lapped th e 19-m an field. A goo d sized field of Open class machines finish ed off th e da y with Vic kery lea ding ou t th e firs t o f 55 lap s ove r Gu enter Gmelin and Steve Simo ns, tea med o n a very different Maico wi th gas forked everything. Va nderp ool's tricko ISDT Hus ky is fo r sale, by the by . Gmelin held the lead t hro ug h lap five but along came Al Kenyo n. He and Vanderpool diced fo r o ne lap, then Vanderpool lost po wer and pulled off. The Gmelin /Si mons m od el lasted a few more laps and reti red w ith u ndetermined ills while Ken yon sprin te d away. Lewis Man sfield was st ill feeling pre tt y zes ty an d was n ow . in seco nd with J eff Payne/ Bo b Friedland ca tching and th en pas sing o n th e 11th lap . Moving up into th ird on t he 17th lap was the J erry Kole /Pa t Fretwell team up o n a very street legal D & D Cycles 360 Pursang. On the gas stop s Keny on lost the lead briefly bu t came bac k with Mansfield second, Payne / Fried land th ird o ver Kol e /Fretwe ll and a ne w team o f bro the rs Rod and Ron Lessley rid ing a stock 350 X L t he first of t he bu nch ba c k a lap. Big Al noted in a sign al to the p it o n the 40th lap th at his rea r wheel wa s so ftening. Three laps la ter Van derp oo l tion in a tr emendous main event battle while old ma n Duan e Sp ence lost the 650 Expert Mai n j ust 20 fee t fr o m t he end when his Triumph wen t on one cy lin de r and Craig Rogers n ip ped him at th e checkere d. Spen ce led out the 650 Expert fea tu re with TIf Mulle nax and Rogers chasin g whi le Bo b Masters and Rick Ot to freight tr ained behind. Ro gers got by French y th e TIf on th e second lap and closed th e gap on the third but each time he would ge t near Spe nce , the "Social Security " driver would pull away a t will. On the fourth lap John Tavis slid aro un d TIf. On the next lap Mull en ax sta rt ed sendi ng o u t sho wers of spar ks from his rear disc an d he dr opped off the pace, allo wing Otto and Masters arou nd. On the last comer Spe nce to ok a goo d drivin g lin e an d then slowed, allowing Rogers th e win wi th Ta vis t hir d an d Ott o p ulling in the last sp ot . The 500 Expert Main was an ot her thriller with the lead changing a co up le times a lap as Ek lund d ueled with Mike Van Lie nden, Den nis So uza, J im Foley and Benny King. Leadin g o ut the six lappe r was Va n Lie nden on the Selby Motors Su zuki with Ekl und , So uza and Foley following. The first thre e swapped position s going over th e ju mp and th en go t ba c k in to the former spots goi ng down t he fro nt straigh t. On the t hird lap Ek lund to o k ove r from So uza with Kin g moving in to fourth and J o hn Hlebo mov ing up fro m a last p lace sta rt. Lap fo ur wen t to So uza with Eklund in th ird and lap five to Van Lien den wi t h Ek lund in second whi le Hlebo elbowed in to fo urt h and stayed. Letting o ut all th e stops on the last lap, Ek lu nd flew high an d lon g over the fast jump and out slid every one to th e checkered with So uza nipping o ut slidi n ' Mike. The BG's Pizza Par lor bunc h clean-sweeped th e 500 Junio rs winni ng • all th ree trophies on 35 0 X Ls.
