Rich Word edged out Butch Cochran fo r first , and Californian Cecil Arispe nudged Brian Peterson out o f third. Bob Connors went down o n tum one, go t it underway only to find his friend Randy Haberman d own in th e next right-hander, and stopped to help. The 20 0 class must h ave been jinxed. Out of 10 riders in heat two , only four finished. No injuries but Harold Hurd had his wi nd knock ed out when his scooter lit on top o f him. Frank Word was the undispu ted A Main winner and Russ Salmons, Steve Do lezell and Scotty Me Lane battled h ar d fo r the next th ree slots. Two-fifty heats and mains were fast and easy. a few down . again, no inju ries despi te th e gre a t amount of speed. Tim Allen d id a ne at lookin ' slide in t he TO, belly-down . Bill J oyce (Hon) was pe ckin' at Racca's fender most of th e ra ce and provided great action both motos for second overall. The largest class o f the evening was th e 80 cc Novices. They were divi ded in to two heats with the first four from each heat transferring to th e Main an d two riders fro m the semi to make a total of 10 bikes fo r t he Scratch Main . The No vices ran a fas t and exciting race wi th only one rest art. On th e restart Frank Zubie tta was into t he tum first an d held o ff th e charging pac k to take the win. In the 80cc Amate ur Main th e hard ch arging Junio rs put on a go o d race with Tom my Had lo c k t akin g th e checkere d nag witb so me pro st yl e ridi n g a nd Bo Hipp t o n finishing sec o nd . It was bad lu ck nigh t fo r J u nior ride r Mike Darby who n o t o nl y du mped hi s bike in th e heat race but was black nagged in the Scratch Main fo r a rid in g infraction. 'The 100cc class was ron as a co m bin ed class co nsistin g of Novice, J un io r an d one Expert rider. It was a close race with Novice Scott Hoagland taking the win. • • Lesniewski takes over at Helvetia By Sallee Hilton BRYTE, CAL.• MAY 18 By Lee Darby RENO, NEV. • MAY 21 Neither snow, rain or hail seems to be ab le to dampen th e sp irits o r rid ing ab ility of the local mini riders an d the ir program held every Wednesd ay n ight at the local fairgro unds. With sn ow o n Monday and rai n an d h ail on Tuesday n igh t it 100 ked lik e a c ancella ti o n for sure. However, on Wednesday the weath e r cleared somewhat an d the race was held as scheduled. In the 60cc Novice Ma in it was a ho tly con tested race from start to finish with Kerry Darby o n his Ho nda MR 50 jumping out in to the lead off t he line an d nev er relin q uish in g it fo r the 10 laps. In hot pursuit were the Yamahas As the 125 Experts revved fo r th e start of their first moto, murmurs amo ng the spectators hinted an ticipation of a super race between No . On e Blue Pla te Eddie Bro wn an d little 87 pound Danny (Magoo) Chandle r, both Honda m o u nted. Magoo to o k t he immedia te lead and fo r the fir st half of the first lap every thi ng we n t acco rd in g to ex pe ctatio n wit h Mago o and Brown p utting o n a great race. In the nex t h alf of th e lap Magoo crashed tw ice an d fo und hi mse lf try ing to cat ch the p ack wh ile Bro wn, now all alone, was stretching h is lead. Magoo wo rked his way backup to third by the end of th e sixth la p, gaining m omentu m , and had Brown in sight when everything su ccumbed to a massive changeover. 39
