SoCalround ' Ah, Sweet success By Lane campbell BA RONA, CALIF., MAY 24 C h e ck e r s described Team Yamaha's Dot. Sweet as riding like a calculating mac hine as he started out this year the same as last - by winning the opening round of the AMA/NATC championship in Southern Californ ia. For someone brought up on m ud, roo ts, an d roc ks with moss on them, it was an act of total concentration for t he New York rider to adapt to dry heat and powdery hardpan tractio n. " It was ~ _ har d trial because It was hot ", Don said afterwards. "I was fagged out on that second lap ." Tired or not, Sweet p ut toget her rides of 13-12, coming in 27 minutes into his grace period for an unofficial 27.7 score, outpointing runnerup Joe Cuglie1melli (Hon) by six poin IS ove r the two circuits of a 15 m ile, 16 trap loo p . Very few of the nat ionally-ranked entrants finished without time penalty as the heat, the powdery tractio n, and the generally rocky, cobby sections all took their toll. One of those few to finish o n ti me was 1974 champion Lane Leavitt, in at fourth overall. UI was eatin " it." Lane rem ar ked after his first loo p. He was ri din g h is "old" Bultaco, as his primo o ne is still on its way back from the Scottish Six Days, having been tie d up in British customs. Though Lane's bike sounded ready to die on short notice, he rode as though , the bike wasn't supposed to ma ke much difference. Surprise placers in the Overall were Mike Markley (BuI), of Milford. Indiana (an ungraded rider taking his first crack at a national trial), in at fifth by virtue o f being five mi n utes late on top of a poin ts score identical to Leavitt's; and th ird place man Bob Hopkins (Yam) fro m Union Lake, Mich . Hop kin s, in man y sections ap peared one tick from joining the Renthal -for-lunch Bun ch , but despite the gymnastics, t urned in lo op rides o f 18-24 plus 4.6 po in ts time pe nalty. The men-from-boy separators we re Six "an up hill creek bed with bad th ings in it" (anon.) which gave up no thing but threes and fives; Eleven, a sidehill section with enough ins and o uts to force several deliberate dabs; and Fourteen, a deep gully creek bed with pucker-power descent and climbout, It was in these, and a lso in T welve, wh ere Sweet's total concentration really paid off, while o th ers got rus he d and blew a point here. a point t here.
