Ti me figured even more heavily here than at Barona,as nearly everyone finished late and point spreads we re t ight amo ng the to p riders. If heat was a factor at Barona, the n heat and toil were redoubled on the seve re up-and-down loop laid o ut in steep fo rested ravines at Mammoth Bar o n the sparkling-swift Ame rican River . The first sect ion, in sight of th e starting line, was just a sample of wh a t was to co me. An L-shaped sta ircase paved wi th bowling balls, its ascen t was a go od forty feet wid e with a multiplici ty of possible lines , all o f t h em bad. Marland Whaley, am o ng the slightly awe d firs t gro u p o f riders, spent a goo d twen ty minutes stud ying it , a delay which may have cost him a clea r vic tory. To add insult to injury , he fived it t he first try. Among the other first -loopers , it was a series of threes and fives, until Bernie Sch reib er go t up it with a for ceful two , and lat er Mike Griffitts replied wit h a o ne . From there, what cou ld have been a point-by-point battle d egenerat ed in to a race fo r t im e and surviva l. as a bottleneck developed at trap s two/th ree re m iniscen t of t he Saddleback in te rnatio nal . The tw o b ack -t o -hack traps we re up a tre ach erous o ne-l ine water-we t gu lly with a sid eh ill sin gle file approach and no way o ut excep t up . It see med to take foreve r to clear. Further uphill was Fo ur, an o th er gully climb but with an in te re st ing dual-l ine turn in it . Then a toiling cli mb up a zigzag sidehill trail that wen t on fo rever b ut gave a spectacular view ac ross th e go rge if o ne ha d t ime to loo k. On ce clear o f t ha t, it was boogie ti me, thro ugh Five and back to camp where th e hill climb special te st awaited. Acc o rd ing to early returns, Mike Griffitts, Martin Belair, George Smith, and Marv Heath (no t necessarily in th at order ) fin ish ed wi th three-figu re sco res an d less than two points be tween them for the fifth through eighth spots. Bernie fin ished a clear third , and Bob Hopkins was fourth , which should give him the series lead as Baro na-win ner Sweet didn 't m ake it into the top ten and none o f the California riders has ridden two rounds ye t.
