Earlier, Woods ha d won his Semi after barely defeatin g Brian Short fo r the heat win in the final tum of the race. In the heavy money Scratch Main , Steve Bast, feelin g much better after last week's bout with the flu , put it a way wi re to wire. The real race was for second between Mike Curoso and Danny Becker. Th at fight went right down to the fin al in ches with Becker taki ng ru nnerup spot. Woods got a bad start and couldn 't find the right 'co m binat io n to wor k up. Division II honors we re claimed b y Dan Hu ckans over Dean York, 'Russ Duronslett, Irwin Moon and Bob Hetrick. Randy Le wis had made the Main b ut crashed and cou ld n o t m a ke it to the line agai n. Costa Mesa, Californ ia May 23,1975 Junior Speedway , or Mini Speedway , has been delightin g the fans for the past four years a nd it has b een said th at they arc t he future of the sport. The future is here a nd now, as ex-Min i Speedway rider Sh awn McC onnell just turned sixteen and go t his S.R.A. Rider's card. He came to Costa Mesa Friday night to ride wi th the b ig guys an d turned out to give t hem all a lesso n in ridi ng as he went al l the way in both his heat races and the Main for the win in Division Ill. The sixth ni gh t of Speedway racing at Costa Mesa and the six th nam e to be ad ded to the winners' list in the Handiap Main is Scott Sivad ge, Scott cro ssed the finish lin e with a few feet to spare over Brian Short. A large n umber of fans that were heading out of town for th e lo ng wee ke nd stopped by to see their favorite sport , turning the parking lot into what looked like a conventio n of motor homes an d cam pers. The stop was well wo rthwhile; they got t o see Mike Bast co m e o n in the Scrat ch Mai n Even t fo r his fo u rth win of t he season. Mike Curoso is the o n ly o ther rider to get the checke re d flag in a Scratc h Main at Cos ta Mesa an d he has gotten it t wice. Then th ere was Mark Smi th in the Division II Mai n who was driven off th e track at the start of th e rac e by Ho m e to wn Hero George Ferrel l. At the starting tapes when George o n the o u t sid e m ad e a move t o the pole , Mark j u m ped th e insid e pole then ran ove r the foot of co -p ro m o te r Bob Francesco and crashed a t th e feet of the photographer. Jim Gresham won the Handicap Main running in fifth pl ace when St eve Columbo had his rear tire co me o ff the rim bringin g hi m to a quick stop in fron t of the pa ck , taking out three other riders, a nd letting Gresham take over the lead for the win . With Steve Bast out of the Mains because of th e two flats, Mike Bast won it for the fa m ily . That has be en th e story all this season ; if Mike is out of the Main Steve wins and if Steve is out, Mike takes over. George Ferrell's win in Divisi o n Two as a hometown favorite wa s h igh ligh ted by m o re than half of the field being made up of Kern County area riders. Bakersfield's own Deadly Ed Schweitzer is at lo ng last going to han g up his steel shoe and become the sponsor of No . 128 , Dan Toomey o f Bake rsfield.
