Past years have been blessed with such ni ce litt le niceties as rain , hail, and even snow. Bu t th is year just wa rm , pleasan t weather to sweat off a few of th ose de sk pounds we tend to accum ulate . A num be r of Greenhorn-entered riders were on han d for a final tuneup, A few new bikes were being broken in also. Cooper-sponsored Sam Lyman showed up on a new Bultaco Frontera rais in g a few eyebrows. It seems Cooper . sold out and his bike went with the deal (Repor tedl y to the Jones Bros.]. Sam lost a grand total of one ( I) second which will be good for m ay be fo urth overall if he 's lucky. It was that kind of enduro. Actually it wasn't the super easy type of enduro at all. The first loop was what I would consider a fair balance, offering a mild challenge for the kids and powder puffers. and still n ot overstep or too hard. There's a fine line there and PVDR successfully drew it. The first check had the bet ter riders a little puzzled as they either burned it or just snuck in on their m inute. PVDR race referee Dave Martin graciously offered to recheck the mileage and the three mile chec k was found to be in error. This means the distance to the first check was just a little off, to the tune of 0,1 mile. Doesn't sound like much but at 18 mph that's a 20 second error which is a lot. The rest of the 28 mile loop was pretty well spot on. The fin ish was a "secret" check in that wh ile th e mileage was known, you couldn't co me in early, you had to be on time. Some serious time keeping was in order as it was also the tiebreaker. The second loop had some very interesting and fun sections only marred by a lack of checks. One o r two more and there would have been a lot less zeroes.. (There were o nly two.] The run out to the three miles check was probably th~ best part of t he enduro. Some riders screwed up t heir speedo read ings when t he y did n 't m ake it up very challenging, rocky uphill just p rio to the check. A lo t of sand washes wit h giant whoopers got the old legs a goo workout and one 12 mph sec tio n gave us our mon thly rock garden prac tice. The first check of the secon d loo p w located in a 28 mph section so yo u ha to hump it to make it. Quite a fe riders did fro m what I've heard. I know of three zero zeroe (sco re Itiebre a ker ) and two one secon lost. Th ere was no tiebreaker on th second loop which was strange as th had to rely on the easy finish check 0 the first loop . Suzuki rider Ed Mazenko (in one 0 his rare finishes), and Honda four stro k rider Crash Cano (Yes , that's eactly wh they call him that.) and Bob Ashlock in c on te n tio n for first overal l d ue t their zero scores and will probably b awar ded a tie (unless PVD R decides t flip a coi n whi ch would probably be jus as fair as their tiebreaker) . Results when we get them in th mail.
