In th e whole Novice line-up there were on ly two n on-Y am ah as, the Bultacos of Ricky Graham and Steve Dietz, (who ha d won a t San J ose). As mentioned before the fog had started to appear and visibility from the stands wasn 't the best as the low ceiling held t he smoke an d st uff down low. It was a Ric ky Grah am - Vin ce Mead go at first with Mea d reall y working at it . Righ t be hind Ted Davidson (Yam ) was co ming up through th e pack, du cking under Craig Annstrong (Yam ) and m ovin g up another place. When Mead bobbled Grah am got him b ut couldn 't h old on to it and Mead go t h im back. Lap seve n Davidso n to o k over and neither o ne of them could catch t he Mo desto rider. Right behind Richard Plueger (Yam) and Steve Carrillo (Yam ) set tl ed fourth and fifth between them . The Junio rs were u p next and afte r Murray Hoffman 's neat ch arge o ff the line which ended in an easy slide out, they settled do wn to a p rocession. No one was going to catch Steve Eklund (Yam). Behi nd him were Pat Guthrie and Dan McWhorter, an o ther Junior who is having a go od year and keepin g the cro wd on their to es at Asco l Friday evenings. 'Thin gs didn 't look to o well for Pat McCaul who had troubles on the tin e requi rin g aid from mechanics as th e Experts lin ed up for the big on e. Finally th ey we re under way and it was Hoc king in the lead. Earlier, in the in terview p eriod Roberts said the winner would probabl y be th e guy wh o got out fron t first , the track be ing the way it was an d Hocking agreed. McC aul was second, the n Roberts an d Raw ls. Kenny m ad e his pas s an d got McC aul . Lap five, Gene Ro mero had to re ti re t o the pits with a bl own engine although he never m ade it t o the very fran t. Now it was ti me for Roberts to m ake a m ove against Ho cking. First he tried the in side route do wn t he back straigh t then we nt t o th e inside for the front section . Finally he go t h im and the crowd was wild, but Hocking go t hi m back an d then co mmenced to put a little distance between them as if to say , " That's eno ugh of that. " McCaul m ade a goo d run at Roberts, then his bik e blew an d again , Ro berts was going faster. \\'a1 t Fos ter (T ri ) was giving J im Rawls a go od go and finally go t him to take third. The checkered flag came o ut and co m ing o ut of t he last tu rn , up we nt Ho ckin g's front wheel again and he rode the rear all t he way down the straigh t fo r the second win there. in two years.
