-:Ie 50, a positi on held by only the Bast Bro th ers at Irwindale. Dubb responded by taking third and final transfer out of his heat and then taking second in the Semi. Wayne Lewis, hugging the zero-yard line, won his first Heat. took the Semi and wound up the Handicap Main victor over Bob Schwarts and Bill Cody. He jumped to that lead while Schwartz and Ferrell fough t it out in the pack trying ' to get through. The big names failed to get things going in their heats as Rick Woods was eliminated righ t away and Steve Bast was erased in lI eat One. Mike Bast could not transfer out of his he at either. Schwartz was the other Semi winner. In big bucks Scratch action. which really got the fans going nuts. Steve Bast took the first heat win over Sonny Nutter. Then Woods and Schwartz played dice in Heat Two with the pair swapping it back and forth about six times in the four-Iapper. Woods got there with the victory but the two pounded each other on the back as they headed off the track. which really sent the crowd wild. Mike Curoso then edged Jeff Sexton in the third heat before Mike Bast and Bruce Penhall transferred out of heat four. Woo ds me t the chal lenge in Semi On e topping Steve Bast. Sexton and Pen h all in that order. Curoso then stole the show in his semi when he held off the continued bids of Mike Bast throughout. Woods got a beautiful Scratch Main start and all heck broke loose when Curoso edged his way in to second. forcins the Bast Brothers into third (Steve) and fourth (Mike). It looked a lot like team riding with Woods and Curoso acting as teammates and they held it true to the end. In Division Il, Denny Scopellite used a zero-yard line start to his advantage and held off the charges of Stu Egli (an o th er zero-yarder) to take that class. Bill Cody won the featured Match Race with Bruce Penhall. The race was won in the first comer when Penhall, on the outside. co uldn' t get the bi te. Costa Mesa, California May 9, 1975 Bob Schwartz. the young rider that set a new re cord by winning four straight Handicap Mains , set a new dubious record Friday night at Costa Mesa by ge tt ing run over three times in three separate events. In each case he walked away, each time he was the victim. All this kept him from earning a ride in the Main . Speedway at Costa Mesa is at an all time high. In four weeks there has been no repeat winner in the Handicap Main Event. Mike Bast, Steve Bast an d Mike Curoso each have won the Scratch Main. Dean York added his name in the growing list of firs t division riders to win the Handicap Main. Dean was closely challenged by Steve Bast all the way from the 40 yard line in the final lap . As Steve Nu tter went wide it looked as if Steve Bast would h ave a clear shot at the leader, but a little too late as the victory went to Ventura 's own Dean York. For the second straight time this se ason Mike Curoso go t the ju mp on Mike Bast in th e Scratch Main, and in four ex citing laps came out on top with the fans on their feet yelling him on. Bakersfield, California May 10, 1975 Four weeks ago on opening night at Bakersfield in a two out of three Match Race, Mike Curoso won the Purple Helmet from Big Mike Konle and for the next two weeks was triumphant. This Saturday night Jeff Sexton was his competition and proved himself worthy of the job. He lost the first two lap duel but came on strong in the next two taking the title and helmet from Curoso, J im Fishback picked up his second Handicap Main of the week (win ning the opener at Ventura on Tuesday) . Steve Bast ru les the rest in the Scratch Main.
