Charlie Mazzei and Tyrone Br~wn drove two new Suzukis to victory as th ey. led Victorville High to th e winner 's circle fo r th e High School Race Day Trophy. High pain t rider for Kennedy was Larry Bolin ta kin g hi s part o f the 40% brass in the 125 Novi ce class followed by Eddic Gonzales coppi ng sec o n d pla ce troph y in 250 Novice co m pe ti tio n . The stars of the future showed some competition between J ohn close Hemme and "Jetter'" McAlpin in the 0-10 year ai ds and Drew J ac kson and J ohn Hailslip in the 11-14 age group. When the gree n flag fell on t he Open Amateur third mo ta, Suzu ki m ounted Karl Wilson and Band B sponsored Ric h Barnes each had a first and a second o n the sco reboar d . Barnes took the lead as Apple Valley Ace Wilson pushed hi m for seven action -packed laps on the m ile co urse. In Open Novice compe tition, California City's J ac k Boone had it in his pocket with two firsts until lap t hree of the final m o ta when he lost the lead to hard-driving Marty Mlakar, another B and B sponsored rider. Davenport-Dynamic at Corona By Elaine Jones CORONA, CA L , APR. 23 , Doug Davenpo rt , better known as "Dynamic," won both the 250cc Expert short track and hal f-mile events. CA 92683 DSS~ Denny Aguirre pulled o ut all the stops o n the Open Novice half-mile and thought he 'd see if he could run with the Experts. He found he could but it necessitated some super high speeds which ended in a spe ctacular get o ff. Rick Bird ran second to Denny but he kept having trouble with tu m one and managed to dump it at least twice in the same spot. David Skirvin was more than happy to take over the second place honors. Rick fared much better on the short trac k where mechanical problems did in most of the competition. J im Roach had a strange night as · mechanical problems bedeviled hi m too. Luc kily , everything was working on the 250cc short track and he pulled the win over Bud Wootton and Ray Lovell . On the half-mile he worked his way fro m the back of the pack, but coasted across the finish line in fourth pro ba bly th inking of th e bucks it 's going to cost to set th in gs back to no rm al ope rating condi tion. David Kerr literally came o u t o f no where to win th e 125cc Am ateur half-mile. He really didn 't ge t a decen t start all n igh t long an d worked h is way from last to first, gra bbing it away fr om Mike Och s in the last lap . David J en kin s graduate d fro m mini s to the 12 5cc class an d did it in style win ning t he Novice go on a bike th at wasn't eve n his. Lit tle J eff Moo n, ab o ut the size of a bu mp on a pickle, picked up second in both short track and half-mile. • Results in Results Section. behind in both and get around a st rong charging Greg Zeh ner who go t good starts all n igh t long. Rich Warre n put h is twi n th ro ugh a grueling nigh t winn ing both the 250cc Expert Twin half-mile and then barely havi ng enough time to catch his b reath, let alone cool his bike down, before running the Open Expert which he also won . Don Waffle was second in the 250cc go and Floyd Petton had the bridesmaid's hono r on the half-mile. Big w in for John Allison over t op riders at Elsinore Raceway. Rip-snortin' Elsinore racers By Andi Gangewer ELSINORE, CA L , APR. 12 Tommy Walt on and Ch ris Cann on fought it ou t in every lap o f the mini Novice class . Walton took the nu mber one position in the first and th ird m o tos leaving Chris with two seconds and a first. These two l l-year-olds really put on a good shOW as did Scott Fraley who brought in the thi rd position. Sam Bums (Yam) blasted off the line in the 100 Beginner class and so on was way out front, leaving the rest of the pack far behind. Eddie Tafoya (Han) who usually rides in the mini class, tried his luck with the 100s and did a great jo b. Tafoya brought in the second place wi th Ro nn ie Bellani (Yam) ro un din g up the third. In the 125 Novice class, there was some trou ble getting t he anxio us racers off the line, but once they were rolling it was a real battle. Every rider took a different position in each race. The firs t moto was super close between the two ride rs in first and secon d b ut Mack Streagle wheeled his Yam ah a in fo r the win. Streagle ha d so me tr o uble in th e secon d moto and go t a DNF, b ut came bac k fo r a second in th e third moto . Streagle en de d up win n ing the class by only one poin t. Gene Crownover (Yam) took the second overall, by racing to a third, a DNF and a first. The third spot was picked up by Oceanside's Jim Speagle. • Results in Results Section.
