Boy, that stuff must be the staff of life up there in Oregon. I u a: .J ::l > a: a: 5 class and a self addressed, stamped envelope. • Results in Results Section. Pearson nabs Fremont opener By W. H. Spencer FREMONT, CAL., APR. 16 Scott Pearson nabbed the first win of the Wednesday night short track series riding the SK Cycle Bultaco to a narrow win over Pat McCaul and Bob Scally. The even t was shortened to only five laps due to time problems when a rather large turnout and one accident brough t the witching hour at hand. This caused some grief with McCaul and Scally who were setting up for an eight lap event only to see the chec kered a little early. The accident produced no injuries but an inexperienced ambulance cr e w took 20 minutes to make it look good. Phil Howard became th e first double winner of th e new season taking both the 250 and Junior Mains. Chris Dinner surprised quite a few people by winning the 250 Expert Main , his first big bike win and in the process kept back Randy Mamola who took third behind Mike Faria but managed a good win in the 125 Expert class over Rod Spencer. Doug Chandler took the 80 Expert Mini show with a good win over Blair Newell . Joel Green dueled with Doug Baber in the Junior slot. Results in Results Section. Ferguson thumps to two wins at Chico opener By Rex Backman CHICO, CAL., APR. 26 Greg Ferguson convincingly won both of the main events he rode as Cycleland Speedway opened their weekly short track series. Greg took the lead a t the beginning of the 360 Expert Main on his san o Cycle Factory Honda. John Grant held down second while Lowell Moural rode the outside of the cushion track trying to get by John. Ferguson, who adapted quickly to the new track surface, lengthened his le ad over the other two. Grant highsided as he entered tum o ne givin g Moural second and Ferguson 's teammate J eff Sierick th ird. Motocross rider Delno Becker (Hon) led the 200 Handicap from start to finish. Jeff Fowler (Kaw) and Ken Gr ay were trying hard to get by th e stubborn Becker but co uld not quite do it. Coming into tum one, Ken tried t o get by Fowler on the in side , lost his front wheel, and slid wide into turn two , givin g Dave Nakao third. The 250 Handicap was restarted as the last three riders Cliff Hy lton, Robin Hill and Dallas Turner fell together in tum one. John Evans (Hon) and Maurice Merrill took advantage of their small handicaps to take first and se cond off the line followed by Chris Sauer. Chris Sauer fell as he entered the first comer allowing Robin Hill into third. Hill quickly passed Novice rider Merrill and set his sights on Evans . Robin took o ver the lead as he slipped by Evans coming out of tum two. Cliff Hylton moved past the now slowing Evans to get second. Delno Becker (Yam) and Brandon Carnahan were the early leaders of the 360 Handicap with Jeff Sierick in third. On lap two Carnahan fe ll and Becker faded into the pack giving the lead to Greg Ferguson who had come up from the 60 yard line at an incredible pace . Lowell Moural and Steve Dietz chased Greg as the pack th inned out on the one-sixth mile track. Ferguson took the chec kere d flag for the win fo llowed by Moural and Dietz. • Results in Results Section. Keysville trials By Supatoad, the trials frog KEYSVILLE, CAL., APR. 13 P.I.T.S. Bake rsfield held its second trials in the Black Gulch area of Keysville. In response to some complaints from the riders about the length of the lo o p in the previous meet, the loop was shortened from 22 miles to between six-seven miles. This was done mainly to eliminate certain lengthy sections of the road where there was two-way traffic. There was a little bit . of everything for everybody in the wa y of sections. Typical comment: "Any water sections today? " - "'A few." - "How deep?" "Did you bring a snorkel? " - and so on . Though not really as bad as it seemed, section four was a tricky one, especially for the Am ateur-Experts. The section went over a sm all lo g, out into and across the Kern River, and return via the same route. It would have been relatively easy e xcept th at the bottom of the river was covere d with large, loose, very slimy rocks. Overheard in the section - "Boy, that things slicker 'n a catfish in a jar of Vasoline. " There were seve ral interesting duels during the meet, especially in the Novice A class, where Hal Dixon (Suz) and Harold Sp rayberry (Bul) ran fairly close until section nine on the last loop where Sprayberry took a hard five and Dixon went on to take a first. A sim ilar situation occurred in Novi ce C (Non-trials bike) class where Bob Price (Bul) edged out Darla Smith (Mon) by one point for t he win. There was a very high attrition rate in the Kids class but this should not reflect on the fantastic ride put in by Levi Sm ith (Yam) . Levi dropped only 29 points in th ree loops. With · one exception, the kids rode the same sections as the Novi ce Cs, where the lowest total was 50 points dropped. With the exception of some slight misunderstandings between P.l.T.S. Bakersfield and the Army Corps of Engineers. California Highway Patrol, Kern County Sheriff's Office, th e CIA and the June Taylor Dancers, everything went fair ly well. (1 can say that be cause I didn't have to ride it - ha, ha .) • Results in Results Section. ~@fUZ@N~ ~ /(y]N~UM)~~ ~""""- announces new ownership with dynamite $aving$ Bike $aving$ i.n!n_ Suzuki's new RM 125 for immediate oeuverv CZ 250 Falta Re ploca .
