High School MX By Terri Buchanan CORONA, CAL. , APR. 25 This week had a strong Chino High team claim ing first, with 104 points, second go ing to Notre Dame with 70 , Pomona taking third after collec ti ng 49 points, and Eisenhower getting fourth with 28. Rich ard Harris (Chin o, Hon) led th e first moto of the 125 Senior cl ass, follo wed closely by Terry Bockelman (Chin o , Hon], Bockelman threatened to take away Harris' lead more than once, but Harris held on to it throughout the moto. J ackson Kistler (Notre Dame , Han) too k third. Moto two had Bockelman out front, and Kistler nex t. Harris had difficu lti es in keep ing up with th e leaders, but held a stron g third place. The final mota was agai n dominated by Bockelman, p ursued by Kistler. Art Martinez (Chino, Han) picked up a dis tan t thi rd. Boc kelman claimed first overall, Kistler sec ond, and Harris th ird. E ven thou gh Dre w Po rt o (Eisenh o wer, Mai) put on a good chase, Te rry Bock elman ran away with motos one an d tw o of th e 250 Senior class . With n o one near him in the first race, Bockelman had an easy win , but moto two wasn 't quite as sim ple. Drew challenged Terry for th e lead in th e two final lap s, alm os t getting it on the checkered, but Terry pulled away to ta ke an other win for the nigh t. Th e third moto h ad Drew in th e number one sp o t, this time Terry working for the front positi on. Bockelman took th e overal l win, and Proto pl aced second. Drew Port o came bac k to ta ke a three m oto swee p in th e 500 Senior class. Mike Vandermeulen (Chino, Mai) got a be tter start off the lin e, arid led for a short time, but Porto would get by Vandermeulen and go on to take the win in each moto. • Results Pending. RA.C.E. Up lan d, Eisenhower, and a combination of Hemet and San Jacin to for the "A" division . In the " B" league there is North, Palm Springs, Rubidoux, and Montclair. Alta Lorna, Poly, Chino and Corona m ake up the "C" league. The remaining two are UD " with Norte Vista, Arlington, Bloo mington, and Pomona, and " E" with Notre Dame, La Sierra, Garey and Norco. The first sec tion struggled for top h on ors May 2, with North taking the vict ory by onl y t wo po ints over the powerful Upland team. Ramona took th ird with 135, Palm Springs had 88, an d Poly got 54 . TIm Hoo ver (Uplan d, Hon ) was lo o king good in the 125 Senior class , as was Steve Bauer (Ramon a, Hon ), Ken Black (Upl and, Hon l' and Kenny Strand (Palm Sprin gs, Hon . Ho over led moto one , wi th Bauer foll owing. Th en Black took over the second pl ace spot when Bau er had troubles in th e hills. Moto tw o was swi tched around, Hoover ch asin g Bau er , bu t n ot passing be fore t he finish. Hoover got a good lead over the whole pack as he tore off the line in the last moto, Bauer in second, and St rand in third. The positions stayed the sam e throughout the fm al race. Hoover clai m ed first overall , Bau er second, and Black third. Hoover and Black came ba c k for the 175 Senior class, and Gordy Collins (Ramon a, Hon ) entere d th e scene, to ta ke the lead from Hoover on the second lap of moto one. Hoover repassed Collins for the win . Collins was in second, but fell back to fourth, behind Black and Mark Lester (Ram ona, Hon], The third moto had Hoover first o ff the line, first on the white flag, and first on the chec kere d fla g. Collins trai le d not too far beh in d, and Black cam e in third. Overall it was Hoover, Collins, and Black . The 250 Seni or class was on e o f the best battles of the evening, St eve Bauer re tu rn ing from th e 125 clas s, plus Robert Fudge (Uplan d, Pen ), Kelly Calla way (No rt h, Yam ), and George Bak er (Up lan d , Hon ) adding th eir skill. Fudge led mota on e, with Callaway in hot pursuit. Th e second race had Callaway and Fu dge dicing it out, but Fudge h ad about a hal f a foot over Callaw ay at the fin ish lin e. Fudge m ain tained his number one position for the last moto, with Baker keeping a steady second. Nick Barrick (Palm Springs, KTM) held third until the last lap , when Bauer took over. Fudge took first overall, Callaway and Baker go t second and t hird, respectivel y. Robert Fud ge was hot in th e 500 Seni or class also, gra bbin g firsts in m otos on e and two. Barri ck, Callaway and Collins all pl aced high on the list in each moto, b u t the major battle was between Fudge an d Callaway in th e second m oto, Th e big downhill was where Fudge dec ided to pass Callaw ay, after he ha d led everyone aroun d. He j ust ch ose th e ins ide of th e tum when Callaway ch ose th e outside, and slipped past.
