i Local hotline cont'd. ~ t will not pass fro m the scen e. A tip of th e helmet; Diggers ! Hot kids on hot Hondas had a good day . Rich Kouns really did 'ern in th e Open class. I still haven 't yet figured o ut what th at bike and others were do in g in Open but be tha t as it may -Rich really flew and looked grea t as di d his bu ddy in the 2 1" No vice, Jerry Nat elb org on another Honda. Yes, as it was a din osau r day, J un iors are re ferred to as Ama teurs and th ere was no 350 class. In th em day s, Bunc ky , they were 21 inchers. Tom White (Tri) h ad a glorious day. He won th e 50 0 Expert go, then disqualifyin g himself truthfull y to the Diggers for an oversize engine he wen t ou t and did 'em in in th e Open class. My notes on bo th rac es state th at his smooth style was re ally somethin g to see, especially jumping ou t o f the back section. Novices could learn well from watchin g Whit e. Gre g Schweers (Cheney- BSA) to o k the 500 Junior and th ere was no catching him in the first mota , he had that track and his bike wired. In the last round Dwayne Carter (Han) had got it all together and passed him coming out of the back section, goin g like Jack the Bear , and it was Carter's first TT race. Another newcomer to scrambles tracks was Dwayne Brothers (Tri) (Digger Russ Brothers ' kid) who landed in the pond, full y submerging his dad's battered old desert sled. In between races they dried the bike off, (but not Dwayne who remained very damp) changed oil and th en it was out to a thi rd place in th e Novice main. " Fee ts" Minert on a punched-out Beezer (what else would Charles ever ride?) really showed them the way home in the second Open Expert he at and got a third in th e main beh ind Johnny Sprague and Tom White (Tri ). C.H, _Wheat was there too, a 232 lb. Hon -Mai . . . Mai-Hon? . .. - whatever - a Honda engine in a Maico fram e. C.H . had gearb ox problems on th e lin e, had it lo ck solid in fo urt h goin g in to turn one and had a very close look at the tire wall. Scratch on e bike . He th en b orrowed his son Chu c k's Honda on which Chu ck got a third in the 2 1" Expert beh ind Rick Marquis (Ha n ) an d John Sperry (H-D) and just missed a tr ans fer spo t to th e main . Then there were th e nameless hardluck ha ckers (BSA Goldstar rig No . Eight). Off the start o f the ir heat , the monkey fell off as th e flag dropped, landed on his nose, " got up an d star ted running, waving his arms, yelling, "Hey, wai t for me !" The p ilo t got clear aroun d the sweeper be fore he realized something was missin g. (Lu ckil y , the chair was on the right. ) Then on the last lap o f their Semi , th e th ird whe el fell off on th e fr ont straigh t and the rig promptly tossed its crew headlong into th e p its . Th ey got up laughing-hackers are crazy ! Before th e pap er runs out o f ink we 'll h ave to close this with a memory of C.A. Schumaker, Jr. riding an old Harle y in th e 21 " Amateur with a lot of digni ty - Hilltopper Bob Dailey with the longest number plat e out th ere the 500 class Sem i th at op en ed with a Goldstar and a Matchless blasting into th e lead - and th e sidehack bo ys with " Crash " Roes ch going all th e way to Salinas to bring his rig down for the day - then there was that hardtail Harle y of Rick Zimmerman 's with the world's biggest rea r wheel - and - o .k, Edit or. • See you th ere ne xt year!! !! r ="...,.---- - - - - - - - - --..:..-- - -------, I Strange-looking "vintage Carabela."
