cont'd. Crunchy 'Kronts and Kookie II By Jim Bissner C UDDEBACK DRY LAKE, CAL, APRIL 20 It was an ideal day for a desert race as the laO's l\1.C. put on their " If You've Go t The Hair" scrambles which d rew th e largest tu rn - What now, Tom Hascher? With Novice and Am ateur sections ge ttin g tougher, this provided a good start for riders with lit tl e or no trials competition experie nc e. This class was won by Donald Ross (Yam) followed by Malcolm Parent (Yam) and Mike Bembaum (Man ). The top four Beginners were awar ded trials handlebars by K & N and of co urse, also trophied. Th e next ATA Trial will be the Big Bear Two Day hosted by scrA o n May 17-18. Anyone for trials at 8,000 feet? Winners by default By Elaine Jones CORONA, CAL, APR. 9 The night tu rned o ut to be a survival of the fittest with Mike T idwe ll getting three of his four wins sim ply by being the only one able to ma ke it to th e line for the m ain . Th is was th e way it was fo r him in th e 125cc Expert sh ort track and hal f-mile an d th e 250 Expert twin half-mile. The 250 Expe r t hal f-mile had eve ry bo dy on hand but Mik e was o ff o n top and sta ye d t here . Sec o n d place Do ug Davenport, better known as "Dynamic" to his frie nds , worked his way th ro ugh th e pac k to inch his way past Greg John McGowan rode wi th a new partne r t oday , K. J ., offspring of Kookie I. Zehner for sec on d pl ace. Th e 250cc Expe rt sh ort track saw Zeh ner and Davenport again pitted against each other an d it loo ked as if Zeh ner was going t o be able to hold Doug for the d uration, bu t Doug took a chance in tum four on the las t lap and got by to n win a photo fi ish, Fred Canover and Jeff Cesma t were also default winners in the 100-125cc Novice an d Op en Expert 500cc half-mile respectively. David Cote had to wo rk a little harder to win the 100-125cc Novice short track since everyone was still pretty mu ch together then. Gre g J ohnson was second in th at one. J ohn Allis on won both th e 750cc Expert short track and half-mil e . The half-mile gave them all a surprise when they went 12 laps . Th ey all kn ew th ey we re ru nning q uite a few lap s, bu t didn 't real ize how m an y 'til they were to ld afterward and th en they didn ' t believe it. John Allison far out distanced the fiel d. In fact , he co uld have stopped an d had co ffee. Second place Brian Garci a lo oked like he was just ge tti ng i t toge ther wh en it was allover. Charlie Soderstrom had be en runnin g secon d when so methin g happened an d h e slo we d down. He came b ack to pick up third. J eff Allison, foll owin g in big brother 's foo ts tep s, was the eve n ing's only other double winner in th e 25 0cc Novice goes and th e way he ran away from the field sh o ul d see him movin g to Am at eur in th e ve ry n ear future. Jim Roach , wh o ran secon d to him in both events is probably m a kin g an o ffer to the powe rs that be that it happens so on ! • o u t of any district desert event so far th is year. Apparen tly , th e J ac kp ot class was n o t responsible fo r the 676 paying entran ts because o nly 15 riders signed up for it with on ly three Am ateu rs o u t of that sum. The 100s were very disa ppointed th a t th ere weren 't m ore an d th ey h op e to see a be tter sign- up at their Dual Eu ro pean Scrambles with th e Vip ers . Three miles p ast a very short bom b run Larry Roesele r was gettin' it on , way o u t front of Andy Kirker and Tim Bowman with no sign of " Smo ke Bomb " Gaetz in th e top runners But Roe seler 's (so me thing new !). un challenged lead was short lived as he apparently had a spectacular he ad -on crash with a wrong way ride r. Fortunately, n obody was hurt , b ut b o th bikes we re totaled !! When the sm a ke cleared, Kir ker (Yam ), wh o is usuall y on a Can -Am , and Bowman (Yam) finished as t hey h ad started. Art Knapp fmished th ird on a 400 Husky . With Bowman and Knapp taking the ' Open class honors, Jim Sumners fo und himself in third place on his Monoshock, while Bruce Ogilvie (H-D ) and D. A. Davi dson (Yam ) snatched the two-three spot in Division One Expert. Fifteen-year-old Jeff Kaplan (Hus ) be at the leathers off J ac k McEvoy (Bul ) an d District Czar Ron Hall in the 125 Expert class . Ron had a good ex cuse maybe, he raced his new 175 Husky for the first time today. The Trailbi ke class was rathe r interesting . There were 69 entries and on ly three Experts finished. Among th ose were (a.) Mark Cartwrisht (Pen), (b.) Bob Myers (KTM), and [c.) Chu c k Hamil, wh o le ft the p its knowing he h ad a flat rear ti re an d rode most of lo op tw o o n a stark-n aked Akr o n t, J ohn McGowan rode his sp o ns o red Kawasa ki today with a n ew partner, K.J. Both finished okay and th is was K.J.'s first race. I guess Kookie 's ge t ti ng on in years, dogs age seve n to our on e. Th e results, I might add , are very unofficial al th o u gh fairly accurate . You see, th er e were two flyin g ch ec ks that were vide o ta ped so as to ca tch th e dishonest in the ac t. There was also a Fo u r Ace s mem b e r , Marge J enkins , whom I, an d the 100s wo uld li ke to thank p ro fus ely for many ho urs help. Many than ks also to Rescue 3. • Resul ts in Results Section. Ch uck Hamil rode m ost of the second loo p with a ti reless rim. LIMITED OFFER normally ~ for the next 2 weeks only $19.95 universal - fi ts all dirt bikes 1 year guarantee ----------- yes!
