Sprocket Park has been in the past one of the hottest parks in the valley. In addit ion to the ex isting TT t rack, a new MX track is soon to be completed using sections of the scrambles course. First he wave d o ff a tim e trial an d the n cam e ba ck an d turned a slow er t im e. Skip Aksland ca me fro m the back to grab his heat race win righ t at th e fini sh line, knoc king Allison down to seco n d p la ce ahead o f fast qu alifier Ron Pow ell. Ed die Wirth put it all t ogether fo r th e first tim e thi s year to tu m bac k Alex J orgen sen in th e sec ond heat a fter Wirth had p oste d second fastest time trial , J or gen sen th e fourth fastest. Then J orgen sen came' bac k to win th e T rop hy Dash an d p u ll within seven points of Allison as the rid er s came to the lin e fo r th e Main event. Allison ju mped int o th e lead fro m the start b u t was running low while the rest o f the fiel d tried th e very wide and high groo ve th at was bo ne dry due to th e last minute weather ch an ge. Jorgensen hel d second th e first th ree laps b ut then gave way to lon g timer Paul Bostrum who found the slower dry trac k to his lik ing better than m ost . Then Wirth . who was ru nn ing fifth in the earl y laps, got go ing an d wo rked his way th rou gh the pack to take over second with less than two laps to go. Bostrom held onto t hird wit h Walt Foster also co mi ng fro m the bac k to ta ke fou rth. J or gy, winner the previou s week, could not find th e fast way around on a di ffer en t type tr ack an d ended up down in sixth place. Gen e Rome ro broke ou t his n ew trick-special-gofast Yam aha for the first tim e but co uld no t get it run nin g right for time tr ials. Gene fo und himself as the first altern ate for the heat races but th is tim e no a lternates were ca lled. John Allison sprays the hay bales. The Junior Final p roduced a restart an d a ph oto finish. Dan McWhorter grabbe d th e lead with Steve Eklund righ t on his shou lde r. Th e two rac ed this way for the first six laps. Th en the ra ce was stoppe d. Jim " Crash" Crowley droppe d his mount for th e second straight wee k. Th en Nick Nazzisi and Murray Hoffman came aro un d on the nex t lap and Hoffman p lowed into one o f th e fallen machines. Thi s sto pp ed th e e ve nt. After man y ho t wo rds from Nick to Crowley th e race was resu med wit ho ut Nazzisi and Hoffm an. Again it was McWhorter and Eklun d running wheel to wheel. Eklun d, try in g to rem ain undefe ated at Ascot for the third straigh t wee k, made a grea t try on th e final tum an d pulled within less than a foot at the finish line; but the win wen t to Ascot's to p Novice of 1974. Steady J im Wright again cam e close, finishing th ird after lead in g the ear ly laps. Ted Davidso n was th e man once again in the Novice class an d re mai n s unde feated in Novice ligh tweight half mile racing in both th e he ats an d final s. Bultaco mounted Rick y Graham turned back the highly regarded Steve Fo rt un e in one of th e heat races an d th en race d the whe els o ff David son in th e fina l be fore pulli n g off his close second p lace fin ish. Seven year old Chris Sexton from Anaheim , defeated th ree challengers in th e special Mote-Bike intermission dra g races.
