Spencer FREMONT, CAL., AP R. 13 AI Ken yon re turned to the mar athon racing sce ne te amed with Cecil Yother on a new 3 63 MX Bultaco, lapped the 35-team field and se t a new co urse re cord of 68 laps. The Yother Automotive te am led all but the first t wo laps and the middle two (gas stop), providing some glory for Eri c Jones on a 125 Elsinore. Jones had won the last 125 ra ce in March and was trying the Open guys on fo r size . The race for th e top 'sp o t was a three man affair with Bill Risner and bad luck Gary Vanderpool. Risner led o ut th e first two laps with J erry "Kamikaze" Bowers in hot pursuit while Jones held off Tony Littman and Paul Schwafel. Ken y on came up from II th on th e start to fif th on the second lap and the lead on the th ird. Risner hel d second with Bowers trying to hold back Sch wafel. That e nded whe n Schwafel and h is Pop Kenyon Hon da did a super flying- W past the fin ish lin e , los ing the entire throttle assembly , so the defending win ner sat the d ay on the sideline with a frisbee and a sore knee. Taking second from Risner, at least te mporarily, was Rod Spencer o n the super 125 Hodaka b ut he also c ras hed out of contention giving second to J ones on the little bike. In the mini portion, now stretched to one hour, a thin field saw Jeff Bramlett finally win his first marathon with two laps to go in the hour. Bret Heinrichs was teamed with Fr ed Turraedo and at the halfway m ark, Bret turned over the lead to yo un g Fred and it looked rather sim ple, but two laps from the en d the motor quit and Bramlett go t by for th e win. The Hallock b oys neve r missed a beat in the 125 show with Jeff still do in g most of the riding while Mark slowly recovers from a blood clo t in the arm . Jeff also lapped the field while Paul Glade took a well-run seco nd on board a new fo ur stroke Redline operation. Motocrosser Mike Ph illips took Hallo ck's cha nces for a se cond win aw ay just I I laps fro m the finish of the 250 show. The first six finished o n the same lap . Hallock again rode most of the di stance wi til team o ld m an Bo b Rathburn crash in g aroun d for a few laps. The Trails End boys wr app ed up the team end of the day 's racing taking third, fourth, and eighth in this race. The Bob Ed gren /Ch uc k Eastment Penton barely beat out shop owner AI Banta and teammate Brad Beaugnan. Bob Vickery led out the noon show but las ted only six laps go ing out with a broken pipe. Bill Scarlett then took the lead but had to stop for ignition problems giving the lead to John Silva who then gave it to Hallock for a few laps when h e had a front tire p roblem . Hallock led for some 12 laps while Silva and teammate Steve Mo y an o worked back to the front on lap 3 0. By lap 3 5 Hallo ck was on top . The Edgren /Eastrnen t team led for two laps on 42-43 during a riding ch an ge but b y 49 the Phillips/Richards Bultaco had it ill. • Results in Results Se ction.
