APR. 20 As the band snapped on the first 250 Expert moto Don Irby (Bul) jumped into the early lead with Doug Gran t hot on his tail. Grant May 31st & June 1st - Indian Dunes Cash purse to Experts grabbed the lead from Irby befo re a half a lap had go ne by, sh owing so me o f his old fo rm. Mike Six bery (Bul) so on m oved into second o nl y to be snuffe d on a high be rm causing a major bottleneck. Danny San chez (Pen) managed to weave his way th ro ugh the m ess and into a short live d second place . allo wing Andy Segale to m ove in to sec on d wh en he t o o crashed. In the firs t round it was Mar k Gam be tt a who to o k th e lead . followed closely by J ack Keese. both m o un ted on Sambos' Hondas. On the second lap Keese got off hard, leaving Gambe.tta in sole possession of first place. Keese got going again. but not in time as he was by no w a lap down. Mark was n ever challenged as he sailed to an easy win . Th e second m o to p roved to be a carbon copy of the firs t. only this time Keese didn 't crash . Gam bet ta agai n won han dily. followed by Keese. . Do n Bold uc. ridin g a new Suz uki RM 125 . easily won the first m oto. In th e second m o t o it was n ' t quite as eas y for Don . Sandwiched in th e first tum he went d own. put ting hi m a good 15 seconds behind the pack. He restarted and m oved up into the first five by the en d of th e firs t lap . Gr ant clung to Segale 's rear fender like a pi ece of du ct tape as the two circulated 15 seco nds in fro nt of third place Allen Cooke (Bu l) . soon got by Segale, Grant out-horsepowerin g Andy d own a lo ng st raig h t. however, Segale stayed on the gas just a hair lon ger. The two went into th e tum neck and n eck. neither of them giving an in ch. Andy. o n th e in side. cam e in sh allo w and wen t o u t wide causing Dou g t o nerf into the e d ge o f the so ft berm , Segale motored off into the lead. with Doug still ri ght on his t ail. Andy held on to his le ad for two more lap s. with Grant pressurin g him in every co m er. Doug finall y go t by Andy on the inside , but not for lon g as he low sided in a slic k c o m er. In the end it was Segale by II seconds. followed by Grant who held onto seco n d after his crash , an d Allen Co oke fillin g out th e top three. Moto two of the 250 Ex perts saw Cooke get the hole shot and take the lead for the first three laps. Grant and Segale were in hot pursuit. Grant soon took the lead. passing Cooke in m id-air. Doug started to stretch his lead as Cooke and Segale were having a terrific ba ttle fo r second. Andy final ly passed Cooke in the back section of th e track on the seventh lap. Unfortunately fo r Andy it was too late . as Grant had moved in to a commanding lead. When the white flag came out Segale had managed to close withi n 10 seconds . however. Dou g h ad enough of a lead to do crossup s and the like on the las t lap. As Grant took the checkered. being the craz y person that he is, he decided he m igh t as well crash. So he took both hands off t he bars and stepped off his mo unt, m uch to the amazernen t of the sp ectators. Technical ly Segale got the overall win. as Grant was just riding as a pie plate. The 125 Expert class also provided AME's Friday night race at Indian Dunes By Barney Drake VAL ENCIA , CAL., APR . 18 Warre n Reid (Hon) was really flyin g in a packed 125 class, as he out-maneuvered Ray Lopez (Hon ) for first overall honors. Ray Lop ez. a little o ff his usually goo d form, had to settle for seco nd overall. Tom Zahtner (Ho n) n etted third overall. By far th e most exciting race was the 250 Pro s, When the first moto st arted it looked as though it would be another Hansen (Mai) vs, Strauss (Mai ) battle. However. things were different this time. "Bullet" Joe Root (Ossa) mo to re d his way to the second position behind Strauss. Hansen followed Root. Two laps wen t by an d Root fell . Hansen moved into second. still behind Strauss. Behind Hansen, Mike Lacy (Hus) was taking every lin e possible. trying to get by Giardina (CZ) who just wasn't going to let him by. While that was goi ng on. Strauss slid o ut and Hansen saw his chance to grab first position. Mean while Ro o t ha d advanced to second place be hind Hansen . That's how it fin ished: Hansen, Ro o t, Giar din a an d Lacy. The second moto started almost like the first. Strauss was holding do wn the first posi tion. Root again go t a good start but droppe d o u t. Will Ha rper (CZ) filled the secon d position with Han sen be hin d hi m. Lacy came fr om ano the r p o o r start to the fourth position . Han sen slid o ut. giving up the th ird positio n to Lacy . Strauss crashe d. just as in the first rno to . Harper n o w had first position and Lacy secon d. Giardina m oved up to third. Hansen came bac k to fou rth position. giving hi m enough poin ts for firs t overall. Lacy took second and Giardina third overall. _
