J im West was right on Semics this ti me, with Weinert coming up hard and fast in third. Semics had built up about a seven second lead on Weinert whcn Weinert suddenly dropped back. It looked like Semics was all alone b ut Weincrt started his charge up again and was closing fast. Back in third Dan Turner ( Bul) was sh adowing Terry Clark with an eye for that place. Semics led to th e flag where he h ad b are seconds on the fast approaching Weinert. Terry Clark was able to hold off Turner long enough to fmish third. The Ridge Ru nners of Santa Cruz did an exceptional j ob on their first p ro race and the o rganization was praised by m an y riders. • L.A. "Roughing it" at Oakdale By Ann Carr OAKDALE, CAL., APR. 6 Diehard spectators an d 151 riders braved Apri l showers today to view scrambling at Pioneer Arena. A lit tle mud in practice, a 10 mi nute shower, and rain everywhere but here yielded a smooth course for the heats and m ai ns. Novices provided much o f t he exci tement as the Expert an d Junior t ur no uts were ligh t. Gary Hopper aboard a n ew 400 Ya maha cap tu red his seco nd consecu tive runaway win in the Open class , b ut the ri de o f the d ay was by Dave Lehman who came fr o m las t to take second in the event. Hopper also wo n th e 1 75 race which m akes Gary a pr omising Junior can didate. The I a rges t co n ti n gen t o f ride rs sh owed fo r t he 125 Novice class. H onda do mi nated the m ain as J oe Tornao, Ch et Armstrong, a nd Laird Bryhni finished one. two, three. Mike C ah oo n 's Kawasaki slipped into the last tr ophy spot. Junior racing was highlighted by Raivo Trubok in the 250 Junio r/E xpert combined. AI tho ugh second in the event to Ex pert J ahn ny Pittman, Raivo beat out Frances Lopes far the first J u n ior spot - a feat not easy to acco mplish in a first time Junior race . Frances was gunning for a double win after taking the Open Junior m ain . Wilson wins at dusty Marysville MX By Rex Backman MARYSV ILLE , CA L. , APR. 13 By Sue Sykes PUYALLUP , WASH., APR. 4 The race program st arted in early evening with plenty of d ayli gh t to get a good feel of the tr ack during practi ce an d the first mo to in each class. Fourteen racers pulled to the starting gate fo r th e Mini class, As and Bs runn in g together. Russel Tom (Yam) to o k th e first moto lead until a fall after seven laps. Mark Anderson (Ho n) took over fo r a n easy win, scored in the B class. Final scoring showed solid wins for Gary Watson, one-one , for first overall in t he As. In the Pro classes, Open rider Buck Murph y (Ya m ) showed th os e guys the way aro un d th e tr ack. Only took Buck a fe w ro u nds befo re he st ar ted lapping the fiel d. Af te r this grea t fir st moto ride by Murphy he did n' t ge t it altogether to st art th e second m o t o. Gary Potts rode his Hus ky for a first overall in the 125 A, Dave Bachmeier (Pe n ) claimed the 250 A, an d Jerry Johnson (Pen ) took first m oney in the Open Pro. Thir ty riders foug h t it out in the co mbined 125 Band 125 C cl ass for one of th e best rac es of th e evening. Marvin Sy kes (Ho n ) took the lead o n both rounds with Dallas Nyblod (Hon) righ t at th e door once in th e second m o to un til a fall . Sykes scored a o ne -one, Nyblod to ok second overall with a three-two . Race five held the 250 B - 250 C and Open C ' wit h 30 riders giving all they had for two motos. Don West (Bul) took the 250 B, Lewis Pugh zipped by them all for his win in the 250 C class, Pat Wilso n. Charlie Marshall and Dan McConnell won th eir respe ct i ve Expert classes at tod ay's du sty an d ro ugh Mary sville mo tocross. Wil s on (H o n) ha d some tough co mpe tit i o n i n t he 125 class as District-36's top two m otocrossers in 1974, Eddie Brown an d Sout h Lake Tahoe ace, Danny Olsen signed u p. Pat jumped to th e lead at the start o f the first moto with Brown an d Olsen in pursuit. Wilson lengthened his lead as the pack th in ned out. Halfw ay thro ugh the m o ta, O lsen dropped out with a seized engine giving third to Greg Martz. Eddie Brown, just rec overing fro m leg su rgery, couldn 't quite catch the speedy Wilson and se ttled for second in the moto ahead of Greg Martz and Delno Becker (Hon ). The second 125 mota looked to be a repeat of the first ex cept Danny Olsen was missing . Pat Wilson was again leading and being chased by Brown. On the back part of t he cou rse, Brown dropped out with apparen t engine trouble. This gave Mike Marshall second with Delno Becker in third. Charlie Marshall's birthday was today and h e ce lebrated by do mi nating the 250 Expert class on his Mo n tesa. Ch arlie charged to t h e lead in both m otos neve r to be t ouched as the d ay went. Ra n dy Losh took two second s fo r second overall wi th Ch ris lIa rt roundin g ou t a Spanish sweep on his Bultaco in third with a five-three score. The 250 J u nior class was t he closest racing. Doug Hart was the vic tor in moto one followed by J o h n Hammaker (Hus) a nd Larry Parras (Mo n) .
