Bu t as soo n as Cecotto saw the challen ge he squirted t he big Yamaha into ano the r c o m mand ing lead , an d we nt o n t o win j ust as he ple ased. Impressive in the ea rly stages was young English man J o hn ' Newbo ld . He too k third spot from Pon s for tw o laps, before dropping ba ck to fourth place. S h ortly afte r fro nt b rake problems fo rced two lenghty pit stops, and whi ch dropped h im finally to 18th p lace . Baker and Pons battled it o ut fo r th e first half of th e race, but then the American broke clear. and finished just a co u p le of seconds behind Cecotto. But despite all t hat . Pons, who co mple t ed the fu ll distance in both races, grabbed sec o nd p lace overall. Lansivuori's chance at the runner up spo t ended o n the fifth lap when he pulled into the pits aft er pulling through to seventh pl ace , with a serious clutch prob lem. Pit stops midway through the rac e made th in gs ex citing. p articularly wh en Baker and Pons ca me in on t he same lap for fu el. Th e battle between Dave Potter , Charles Mortimer and J ac k Findlay was in doubt righ t until the flag. thanks to those pit stops, wi th Potter fourth in fron t o f "Jolly J ack " and Mo rtimer. Mo rt imer, sixth home, wa s lapp ed by Bellingham , Washington's own Steve Baker .took th ird against the best in the world. Cecotto just b efore the flag, but the E nglish ma n's second rac e had done eno ugh ta-earn him sixth pl ace overall. Seventh ho me in the second leg was Scotsman Alex George, eighth was an Italian Mim o Cazzaniga (750 Ka wasaki) , and ni n th was a Frenchman Jean Paul Bo inet (70 0 Yamaha). American Phil Mc Do nald was 10th, just a machine 's length clear of the Ita lian Sciaresa , but it was en ough to clinch seven t h pl ace over all for the yo ungster. But there was little else fo r th e A mericans to c h eer about . St eve M cLau ghlin failed to qualify after hitting ignition problems on his Yamaha in t he first sess io n . and his best lap se cond tim e out. 2 minutes 11.50 seconds was o n ly three quar ters of a second o utsid e qualificat ion. Ro berts Oul ton crash cost him possible vict ory . while th e Kawasaki effort, suffered st ill further b lows in the second leg . Du Hamel was fetched off at t he hairpin by a lunatic Italian on a 350 Yamaha. and it wa s fear ed the French Canadian star had broken his arm, while J im Evans did only a few laps before his Green Meanie seized again .
