Mike Griffit ts (Man) wo n this toughie fo r his second ATA win of the year. Bernie Schreib er (Bul), literally fly in g in his third lo op, finish ed seco nd . Bob Nickelsen (Ha n), was one of t he few riders to finish within the fo ur an d one- h alf hour ti me limit, at third Exp ert. Mark Eggar (Han) had to be o ne of the most disa ppointed rid ers - he dropped fe we r points than any Expert but was disq ualified (as well as man y others) for not finishing within the five and on e-half hour cu toff. (F o ur and one-half hour tim e limit plus one ho ur grace.] The ha p piest rider a fter the m eet was Mike Meade (Bul) wh o too k first Am at eu r. Mike, an other Bob Grov e pro t e ge, co ntin ues to improve an d imp ress . Bob Burman (Bul) finis hed second followed by Debbie Evans on a new Yamaha TY 175. Debbie, who is only five fee t t hree inches (and pretty) , j ust swi tc hed from a bigger 25 0cc Ossa hoping she co uld do better on th e smal ler Yamah a. Certainly app ears like she did! Of t he 56 Novic es that start ed, 10 fini sh ed. The winner was Glen Coah r an (Man) fo llo wed by Marv Hitchler (Suz ) an d J erry Armstrong (Bu l). Visiting Englishman Dennis Butterworth (who used to ride MX with the Lampkins) dug the " English" weather, found going helmetless in the hail a bit painful. two yea rs ago . Th e th ird loop was especially de solate d u e to the absence of rid ers and so me what spooky since most of the tr ail was co mp letely cove re d over with hail. A portion of th e third loop wo uld have mad e a good sec ti o n. On e dropped in to a gull y , wh ich was over 15 00 fee t lo ng , wi th 20 foo t wall s o n each sid e and only thr ee to five feet wide. This section c a n t a in e d enough roc ks, staircases . switchbacks, etc. to keep even t he best rider on his to es. A very t ired Ed Mills kep t hearing a motorcycle behind hi m in th is section but wh en he turned around. he was alo ne . Mysterious rider ? A visi ting rider fro m Eng lan d.
