In fact, due to the mo b of Novices, there was no Novice Semi, just direct transfers out of the seven Novice heats. Time trials opened on a track witb a very soft, deep cushio n th at eventually finned up and developed a groove, t h o ug h it ca ugh t a few racers unprepared fo r the tacky traction. After surviving a wo bble so violent it pulled the front wheel off the t rac k abo u t four times in success ion coming out of the north turn, DeWayne Keeter quickly changed to a finner rear sp ring. Skip Aksl and's nigh t end ed early , as his Yam ah a apparen tly stuck itself as he headed out fo r his tim e trial. Neither machine got to start, however. Davidson dr opped under Mea d in th e so u th tu rn to take over o n ab ou t th e fifth lap and slowly extended his lead , whil e Grah am settled ou t ahead o f Fortune .
