During intermission . there was a n Easter egg hunt, one fo r riders and o n e f or spectators on the hillsid e o ve rl o o k i ng the tr ack. The Easter Bunny left t wo eggs numbered five a nd the lucky finder received a five dollar bill for h is or her trou bl e. There was o nly one 100cc m achin e t o da y and th at bel o ng ed to Kevin An d erso n o f Rogu e River . And y ou know wh at he d id ? He en t ere d himself in the 175 Junior clas s, a nd wh at a ride! He won th e first moto hand s down, leavin g the 175 riders to wonder what in the hec k had go ne by lik e a bird. Over the first jumps in the second moto, Anderson's chain cam e off; some fra n tic actio n by Dad go t it ba ck on, only to have it s lip off a g a in after the 13·year-old boy had worked his way ba ck to third pl ace. The third moto saw h im down in th e first corner and working too hard to ca tc h up. There is suc h a thing as " t ry in g t o o hard" An d erson pic ked himself up twice m ore and fin ished fo urth' fo r the day. 11,e winner o f the 17 5 Juniors wa s a young gent mentioned before because of his rap id improvement, Rich La Rue from Crescent City. Rich had a ro ugh first m oto but didn't fo ol aro u nd with a nyo ne in number two a nd th ree . The ac ti on of f the track between the 17 5 Ju n i o r an d Se n ior races was so met hi ng t o watch, too. During prac tice , Se nior rid er Bo b Co n n ors b lew a shoc k and got Junior rid e r Dennis Du rrant to loan him one. On ly hi tch Durrant ro d e in t he Jun ior divisio n , whip ped back to the starting lin e, th er e was some frantic t o ol wor k and o ne of Durra n t 's shocks was p u t o n Co n nors' b ike before t he starting flag flew fo r th e Se ni or class. The re were n 't too man y bigger bikes o u t , so the 250 an d Op en classes we re co mbined w it h a sing le gro u p o f trophies. Open Sen ior J o hnnie Beckett d ominat ed the race, m a kin g up for his last Sunday which was ' d isast er da y : a nd fo llo we d by 25 0 Senior Wendell Diltz o n a borro wed 2 50 Montesa, Diltz blew his own bike during the week and as everyo n e knows, p arts are hard to ge t nowadays . Kyle McCaslin, Bill Croy and Gary Bias had quite a hassle for third place. They were rim to rim from start to finish of all three motos. McCaslin and Bias sen t the flagman running after the second moto wh en they both tried to cross the line at the same time, and in the same place, neither car in g about the fact th ere was room e n ough for both! At d ay 's end, a fte r tr ophy pr e s entations, the se aso n high-point winners were a nn o u nced. They were Donni e Migu el -Mini class: Kevin Ander s on -IOO Kids cl ass ; Tim Frye -17 5 class: Wendell Dilt z -250 class; a nd Johnnie Beckett-Open class. The Ch ampionships will be April 20th . Fre ezing temperatures held moisture in the slippery two-fifths mile oval and r iders were ab le to grab tra ction for m ost of the 78-event program. Outstanding Expert wins were posted by Stockton's David Burton (250), Kim J orgensen (500 ), and Duane Spence (650). Burton survived a sp ec tacu lar sweeper crash in th e heat to nail down a wire to wire vic to ry an d the first of seven trophies ab oa rd his Burton Cycle Grin go. fo r me r bl ack plate Mike K a l amares o f Benicia rode a so lid seco nd on a Penton. Ne rvo us Novices d ominat ed the 25 0 rac e as starter Jim Laughlin struggled to kee p th e sec o nd row intact. A standing start p ro duced a wheel-to-wheel battle be t ween Gary Gall agher (Suz ) and T om Cantrell. In a photo finish the scorers ca lle d Gall agher th e winner. An instant replay would have helped. Minibike action fe atured the hard ch arge of little Marvin Lewis in the 80 Novice class. Marvin - aft e r watching his da d take a close second in an exciting 200 race - decided to settle for first. Getting off the line fourth , the little guy dived between two riders going into the tree and was never he aded after th at.
