It was, as was ex pec t ed . a hard fought co n tes t from beg in n ing to en d. The lead cha nge d several times d uring th e COUTse o f th e eve nt and it wasn ' t until th e final lap t ha t the winner was decided. The Rams' 8 0 was ex pec te d to b e a struggle between Rolf Tibblin (who was no-show d ue to .h is Mint 400 injury ) and ISD T star Bill Uhl with variables lik e Preston Gerber (Bu l), Dave Ne well (Hus) , Bob Sward (llus ) an d o t her fast dudes from th e Intermounta in region. As it turned out, fas t an d stead y Cotton Guio from Big Pin ey , Wy omin g passed Winner Cotton Guio en joys one of the more ta ngible fr uits of his labor s. Uhl o n the last la p to ta ke th e lead and th e win. Guio had been riding near the fr ont of the pack throughout the ra ce while Boise motocross ace Larry Buffington on a 400 Yamaha MX diced with Uhl for the lead. Larry was in first on the in it ial lap with Uh l grabb ing the lead o n th e seco nd o ne . Buffington was slowed dow n by the in fa mous Y amaha " Ej ect io n T ank" an d had to stop for a couple of minutes to put the fuel con tainer bac k on the bike. He caugh t back up to Uhl on the third lap and the p air ran side by sid e (an d WFO! ) thro ugh the sagebrush for the majority of th at lap . Billy took firm hold on first place when he and Larry tried to occ upy th e sam e space a t the same time an d th e Yam ah a rider wa s b o unced out into th e sagebru sh. The crash slowed Buffingt on down co nsiderably and he lim pe d in to finish 82n d wi th his face sho wing sign s of " h illside massage. " Cotton Gui o, m eanwhile , had been slowly and steadily ga ini ng on Uhl's 175 Can -Am. With only ab o ut five mi les left in the rac e , Guio made h is mo ve in a long, long sandwa sh. llis 360 Hu sky pu lle d the little Can -Am handily and Bill 's harde st charging was n 't enough to get bac k past th e Wy omin g rider before the fini sh. Cotto n Gu io was las t seen pu shing h is bi ke fro m th e fin ish line with a can or two of Miller Beer in his be lly an d an oth er can in his hand. The race -min ded beer co mp an y do na ted trophies as well as free suds fo r th e even t. Th e ac ti o n bac k in the pack was j ust as fast and furi ous as it was up front. Dan Muller (Hon) rode balls-to- the -wall for th e full 80 m iles to finish six th overall an d fir st 125. An ad mi rable acc o m p l i sh me n t o n the demandin g c o urse. Cotton 's bro the r, Tag Gu io (Hus) naile d down an eighth overa ll and was th ird 250. Ro n Dillon (Yam) p u t on his usual brilliant d ispl ay of rid ing an d came acro ss th e line in fifth and sec o nd 25 0. TI,e first Novice in was Open class rider Dave Carey down in 24 th place. Ther e were, all to ld , 134 fin ish ers out of 23 7 st arters, Th e t oll o f Dr-\Fs included some of the big nam es in Idaho desert racing. Preston Gerber (Bul) took a bad spil l early in the race and suffered a painful co lla rbo ne break. One of the co urse sweepers picked him up shortly after it happen ed an d was giving Pres to n a ri de ba ck to th e pits on the back of his bik e. The pain was j u st more than Gerber co uld handle and h e had to wait fo r a truck to co me out and bring hi m in. Desert racing in Idah o won 't be the same with Preston Gerber out o f the hunt for a co up le of months. Ot her th an th e injuries, the usual vari ety of mecha nical ailm ents put some o f th e more fa mous (infam o us?) local rid er s ou t of contention. Big, bad Layto n Kite was trying out his brand new desert Bultaco and ca me to the co nclusion (a cou ple of blown seals la ter ) t hat he 's go ing to n eed to go to a stouter shoc k . Ki te weighs well over 200 pounds. J ohn Morris Larsen (resident fol k hero) likewise DNF'd but not before he sto p pe d to rebuild a co up le o f d ifferent guy s' bike s an d give someone a ride bac k in. In t he " th ose- w h o-fi nis hedr e ga rdl e ss-of-where " dep artm ent, names to re mem ber include Deb bie Ru sh (Suz an d Bill Uh l's c hic k) , th ird Powd er Puffer, Bob (he crashed try ing t o d o a cro ss-u p for th e camera ) Bosser man, 39 th overall and the ar ch riva lry o f all time . . . Ro dney Co lto n (Hus) an d Wayn e '·Luther " McCut cheon (Hus). Dicing for 100th ov era ll position, R od pas sed Luth er on "a baaaad downhill.
