Conroy moved p ast Ow ens abou t two

o ut fo r th e rest o f the 33-mile loop ,
co ming in to th e pi ts wit h a four-minute
lead ov er Schmid. Owens held th ird,
having been pass ed by Schmid when he
o versho t a turn. lI e was still first
Novice. An other Novice, Jim Art z (4 00
Yam ) was running fo urth, fo llo we d by
Kim McK ean (4 00 Hu s). Vo n Pet erson
(4 0 0 C Z) , w as next, ru n nin g first

l o o p , Conroy dropped o ut with a
bro ken tr ansmission. Schmid took th e
lead a t th at point. Pet er son worked his
way up to second with McKean running
third. Owens was now in fou rth . T he
In va ders ' Tom Kelly (175 Yam) worked
his way up from 12th on th e first loop
to fifth on the second, running firs t
small-bore, second Amateur.
Schmid's lead was secure as he
finished th e third loop well ah ead of
Peterso n. It was o nly his second ride o n
the 400, so Schmid, 43 , lo o ks to have
quite a future on the thing. Peterson
nabbed first Am ateur for th e second
ra ce in a ro w, this tim e o n the
three-year-old b ig-bore. McKean , riding
his first ORA race, fin ished third,
second Open Expert.
Owens pitted on both loops but still
saw his fo urth OA an d first No vice
sta n di ng go down th e drain wh en he ran
out of gas onl y th ree miles from th e
finish . No nethele ss, he bu mme d som e
gas fr om a p assin g spe ctator and
fin ished third Open Novi ce . Kelly took
over fo urth and fini shed first small-bore.
Mik e J oh nsto n (Pen ) go t o ff to a bad
st ar t , estimat ing th at he was " about
150th to the bomb. " He the n worked
his way in to th e top 30 at th e end o f
th e first loop , eigh th o n th e second lo op
and fif th at th e finish. His lo ng chase
got h im first 250 Expert money o ut o f
the $5 00 purs e.
Dennis TIpton (Bul) was sixth , first
250 Amateu r. In seve n th was Don
Rotundo (Hus], in fo r second Open
Amate ur. Rotundo is also leading th e
Open class points chase and th is race
paid maximum poin ts.
Two weeks ago, we ski pped over Lee
Wilso n whe n he finish ed seco nd in the
