"Young" Feets Editor, I was scouring through myoid Catalina, Crater Camp, Riverside 'IT and etc . p ictures and I came across this picture of youn g (16 years) "Feets " Minert at "Old" Crater Camp in 1947. He is doing two things that he would never admit to nowadays. He is riding a Matchless, not a BSA and he is in the act of winning the " Slo w Race" at a So , Cal. MIC Club field meet. His number plate indicates that he qualified 33rd o ut of an allowable entry of 40. In the background is the famous Ernie May from West Los Angeles on one of Frank Cooper's AJSs . Ernie was one of the top riders in So. Cal. although for yea rs he insisted in riding old J D Harl eys th at co uld not be trusted to fin ish. Both Chuck 's and Erni e's b ikes were great little b ikes in their da y. They were called Scrambles Models and had 2 I " rims on th e front, special gear rat io s, an d man y little m od s. How ever, they hadn 't learned abo ut springin g th e rear en ds ye t. I r ecall ri di ng my '4 9 Scrambler in the early fifties in a Big Be'!'r Run an d bei ng the o nly rigi d to finish - 28 th, as I remem ber. I th ink I woul d be six feet tall today if it weren 't fo r all th ose rid es on rigid fra mes. If the mood ever st ri kes you to do a no st algia thing on Catalina o r an y o f the old ra ces, let me know and I'll b undle up my co llecti o n o f tra sh and ru n it d own to yo u. Regards to all o f your good crew, After reading th e letter written by Mike Priseler (Cycle News, March 4) 1 felt prompted to respond to t he queries raised with respect to land man agement and desert ecosystems. The Colorado and Mojave deserts h ave be come the playground for literally millions of Southern California residents. Despite th e im mensity of the desert , improper management and irresponsible actions can do irr eparable damage to this unique resource . How ca n this be if the desert is onl y c o m p ose d of ro c ks , s an d, a n d sandwashes as Mr. Prise1er facetiously alluded to ? We an: all aware th at the desert rece ives precious little rainfall , unlike most other natural habitats. Rain is the primary heal ing mechanism natu re used t o restore da ma ged area s of the landscape. When th e desert "pavement" is disrup ted the blemis h left beh ind m ay ta ke years to erase. Returning to t he le tt er wri tten by Mike Prise1er, I believe moto rcy clists , as c o n c e r n e d des e rt us ers, should cooperate with the BL\1 in their j o b of p reparing im pact stu dies , The desert lan ds need to be pro pe rly m a n a ge d . E .g.• O RV clubs, Sierra Clabbers, campers, e t. al., sho uld be rest ricted to are as of the desert in whic h the ir respective: ac t ivit ies will not have adverse an d lo nglasting effects o n th e env iro n ment .
