Eddie started going quicke r but from wh ere I was st anding lost th e win by less than a bike's length right at the chec ke red flag . Sorry about th at, thumper fans. Third mota it was Dave Destler (T ri ) away first but Carl Pfetzing (Yam ) moved -very well to get him. Then aft er the first skirmish for positions was over, I'm afraid th ing s settled down to a bit of a procession. That is, except for Shamrock Kenny Owen. He and ' his Triu mp h got things worked up and went full st eam. By the end he was right up to the leader. Go od racin g ! The usual gang was o n tap in th e Junior-Expert. From the first mota it looked like it was Jim Wright o n a 750 Yam aha who would be the hardest to ca tc h. But Clyde Denner (Su z) had other plans. Firs t he got Larry Lambert (Tri ), then the flying Wright, and pulled a wa y . Round three Clyde rode th e rear wh eel of the Su zuki all the way alo ng the straigh t and p artially up the hill . Wright was hard after him . Th en Wright, te aring into turn o ne, top of hill, hit the , bl oomin ' kill swi tc h with his finger an d ex pi re d to th e in field. Drat! Brush Busters' Bust Out Hare Scrambles By Jim Stewart RED MO UNTAIN, CAL., MAR. 16 While ' several o f the t op D-37 riders were readying themselves for the Mint on Monday , the re st of us were o ut at Red Mountain for th e Brush Bus ter's Bust Out Har e Scrambles. Close to 4 0 0 riders sh owed up for a day o f never en din g wind an d a hard to follow co ur se. After the bomb was a small drop away . downhill, with a lot of spec ta to rs waiting in suspense a t the thought of the front runners hitting th e downhill WFO. Aft er Wrigh t and Kirker made an an t hill out of what looked to some as a mountain; Dwayne Carter, Bill Becker, and Larry Roesele r came th un dering down it in hot pursuit. . . In through th e p its it was Tom S chmid on a 400 Mono , followed closely by Wright, Kirker, Allen May, Dw a yne Carter , Be cker, and Bill Saltzman. Most o f these front runners co m plaine d of get t ing lost at ~>ne time or another. Ronnie Wrigh t knew his way around the second time and flew in to the finish first ove rall , with Kirker second aft er several unexpected stops on the second loop . Allen May picked up one of his best rides so far this ye ar with a tllird overall, sec on d Open. Following May 's d u s t wa s S chmid wh o lost three positio ns on th e second loop, but still rode in fo r fourth overall, third Open. Fast est four stroke rider in the des ert, Dw ayne ' Carter, held his position for fifth overall , fo u rth Open. Saltzman got pa st Becker and almost ca ugh t Carter sleep ing for sixth ove rall. After gett ing los t' numerou s t im es Bill Becker fin ally foun d th e fini sh for seven th ove ra ll. Bru ce Ogilvie tr aded in his number tw o plate in the Trail class fo r number 3 333x in th e 25 0 class. He may have switched ccs but n ot b ra nds, st ill on a Harley an d en ding up eigh th over all second 25 0 Expert . Max Eddy also changed Bik es, and th e change must have ' done him some good, as this weekend he was first 175 . Expert . Tom Rutten d id have the class lead for awh ile, but his chain parted co m pany with his Hodaka, forcing h im to stop an d fix it. Gary Conner was th e third , 17 5 Expe rt after havin g t o pit himself. N ot since De an Modessett was an Amate ur, has a 17 5 wo n th at class ove ra ll. Danny Williams go t his last trans fer in sty le, first 17 5 Am at eur and first Amat eur overall. Rusty Sander son was th e n ex t Ama te ur an d first 25 0, with Bud Ad ams right o n his rea r fender fo r first Open Amateur. . Ot he r d o-go odies in th e Ama te ur class included , Richard Young and St eve Lin dsey second and third 17 5s, Danny Leuah an an d Gary Laudig secon d and third 250 'class a n d Russell Co llins and Ch arlie Co nway the same in th e Open class. Je rry Herrin seems to have a lot more time t o concen t ra te on his o wn racing career a fte r his son hung it up. His fin ish o f fi rst old timer Amate u r being one of h is man y win s in this clas s d ur in g th e last few months. After th e to p t wo No vices failed to sho w up at t he end o f the second lo op , Te r ry Greaves moved into t he fi rst o verall Novic e spo t. Not far be h ind Gr eaves was the h ot 125 Elsin o re of J ack Ulric h for sec o nd overall No vice . Arn old Kaltc was the first Ope n Nov ice ju st ahead o f Larry Lu ce second 25 0 Nov ice, an d second Op en Novice , fir st o ld time r J oe Rose. Coming th rough th e pits in the T rail Novice class, last week 's win ner, J oe Lo ckh art had a sligh t lead o ver Ken Drak e and Mik e Hosch. All three were in th e t op 20 overall, bu t by the fini sh Lockhart h ad worke d his way up to n in th o ve rall an d had h imself a very co mfo rtab le lead o ver Dr ake an d Hosch .
