The whole co urse has an aura 0 f de feat a nd frustration at every tum, at every bottleneck, at every place where a few forlorn riders are gathered. You hit the fir st check point. You are an hour la te. Your b uddy - an A rider - is there. He has been lost and now is going back by the pavement. He wishes you go od luc k with a malicious grin as you move o ut again. Finally you reach the gas point 40 m iles out an d fo u r hours lat er. So me riders head down to t he pavemen t , so me follo w th e arrows. You fo llow th em and th in gs get worse . Eventually y ou find it agai n and h it the third chec k whe re a m an tells y o u that you are over two hours late an d why n o t just take the p avemen t. Many o f the riders have been forced to park their scooters fo r the past couple of months d ue to snowfall (which can tinues to cover Spokane and neighboring communities). This first race of the jaycees Ambulance Benefit Drive was a great success. New sportsman classes for street legal bikes, aimed at getting the loca l riders into the action, shows promise of m o re participation at the nex t race o n March 9. • Resul ts in Results Secti on . Central California Speedway School By Gene Miller CHOWCHI L LA, CAL. , FE B. 23 Over 30 rid ers from all over the state co nverged on th e one -fifth mile oval for a full day o f practi ce and training , as Sp eedway Central held its se co nd sp eedwa y school and practice session at the Ch owchilla Fairgrounds. Things ra n right on schedule, wi th ex perienced riders on th ei r own m ach in es alternating in a heat ty pe format with green ride rs on m ach in es furnished by Speedway Central. The unique session gave riders a chance to practice under conditions they will encounter on the track. The first riders rolled out at ab o u t 10 a.m , and there were steady riding until 4:30 p .m. Lots of 'e n do s' , 'sideos' and wheelies spiced the day's activities but oth er than some injured egos and motorcy cles there was no serious da ma ge done. The new rider group was enthusiastic and put forth a real effort. Honorary a wards went to the following people: Best pusher -Dan Toomey 's sister. Most rides-Bob Bondurant .
