There was never any dead air while Huffman held the micro ph on e an d during the lulls between motos, Huffm an conducted interviews with J ohn DeSoto, Gary Bailey and others to keep the audiences ' attention. Mu ch appreciated was Huffman's quick work during the first 500 moto on Saturday night, which was highlighted by a wheel-to-wheel clash between Tony Distefano an d Steve St ackable. On the last lap Distefano was in the lead with Stackable less than a bike length behind. As the du o hit t he switch back section Stackable made a move th at loo ked like he had fo rced Tony o ut o f the tum with a bike' and bo dy bl oc k that caused Distefano t o fal l. Hu ffman reacted immediately and co ntacted the two riders in t he p its and then brough t them out to te ll the cro wd what reall y happened. Distefan o explained to a hushed sile nce th at his gearbox had lo cked up an d t hat he act ually fell ove r into Sta c kable's path. 250 Class The first ac t of the weekend sh o w fea tured a hole sh o t by Marty Smith fo llowed by J im m y Ellis, Rich Eierstedt and Steve Wise. Smith was in a secure lead until h e fell midway th ro ugh the race co ming off a ca m elback jump on th e back side of the course. Ellis then to o k over the lead with Rich Eierstedt trying to get close enough t o challenge but he wa s hampered by traffic. Smith, wh o rejoined th e race in about eighth place, fo ugh t ba ck through the front runners an d be gan clos ing stea di ly on Honda te am mat e Eierstedt in the final minutes of th e m oto . The moto also marked th e begin ni ng of a bad luck weekend fo r 25 0 Na tional Ch ampion Gary Jones (C-A) as he DNFed wi th gea rbox probl em s. In th e second round Ellis gave way to a Ghost from th e past as Sonny De Feo grabbed the lead at the st art and held it until he fell in a soft , san d y tum . Ellis th en took over the lead and withstood a tw enty-on e lap assault by Texan Kent Howerton (B us ) to p ost back-to-back wins . Howerton st ated afterward that he had used Ellis as a p acer and decided to cool it and go for the overall points instead o f trying to fo rce his way past o n the tight co u rse .
