Second moto was an instan t lead fo r Mar k Kaestner, but a starting gate p roblem rec alled the race. Again Weidman led the restart. b ut soon fell. Russ Roberts and Ric k Ben ek ba t tled until lap six , when Benek broke. leavin g Dan Bunker in secon d and Chuc k Sun third. Open Pro was a Mit ch Simmons benefit, as th e Lynnwood pro took both m otos for th e overall . First moto saw Bert Noble taking an imm ediate lead, but on lap three Simmons got by and was gone for good. Second moto was agai n Noble, then Simmons leading, but o n lap three. Simmons st alled on the north end of th e track. Noble took the lead, whil e Simmons held sec on d place. Simm ons appeare d to be having shifting problems, and wasn 't even close to No ble, when th e lea de r 's bike quit two laps from th e en d. Simmons then held off Randy McAllister's last-minute charge t o tak e the moto and the overall. McAl lister was sec o nd o verall, followed by Terry Barnett. Bert No ble , and Pat Emm ons. Sierra P.I.T.S. enj oyed mild temperatures and a slight b reeze for their tri al. Th e nin e sections were mostl y in rocky ravines with the exception of section n ine, a mud bog in which y our tires sank about six inches. By the end of the trial the mud had turned to gush that resembled a chocolate milk sh ake. A battle developed between Yamaha works rider Steve Darrow and Bultaco works rider Lane Leavitt. After the first loop Leavitt posted a remarkable four with Darrow coming in with seven. The secon d loop Leavitt posted an outstanding two points with Darrow only one point behind. Loop three proved disastrous for Leavitt who lost two points in section five that h ad a very di fficult off ca mber slab rock. Then a combination of a lo ose ro lly ro ck and a log in sect io n seven threw Leavitt down for a five, so every on e waited to see wh at Darrow would do . Darrow posted a two point loop th at put him ahea d by a narrow two p oints. No w th e questio n was co uld Darrow hold the lead . He di d. •
