Sacramento, CA 95826 less sound more ground Bill Grossi and Tim Hart raced a driving duel under the semi-covered Dall as stadium that 48,000 cheer as E first round of Ya of Motocross By Richard Creed DALLAS, TEXAS, FEB. 28-MA R. 1 Can-Am mounted Jimmy Ellis and Texas Maico Meister, Steve Stackable, wore the victor's 'laurels at the end of the opening round of the 197 5 Yamaha Super Series of Motocross. The event was he ld in Texas Stadium located in the nearby suburb of Irving. Over 48,000 fans swung the turnstiles of the two-night event to watch so me o f the best motocross racing in recent memory. Ellis co mpletely dominated the four- moto 250 class with three wins and a second place behind Marty Smith in the final moto o n Saturday nigh t. Reigni ng 125 Natio nal Champ ion Smith rode a 250 fact ory Honda to secon d in the fin al standings beh ind Ellis an d ahead of Suzuki's Billy ..Su gar Bear" Grossi, who turned cons isten t perform ances into a third o verall series position . Su ch stars as curre nt 25 0 Natio nal Champion Gary Jones, Mar ty Tripes of Team Bulta co, X-amaha's Ti m Hart, Honda 's Rich Eierstedt, an d Trans-AMA Support Class winner Kent Howerton were defeated handily by Ellis who has full y recovered from last ye ar 's injury-plagu ed seas on . It was almost a year ag o that Ellis suffered a disastrous acci dent th at almost ended his care er and caused him to miss five of the nine event 25 0 National series. Th e Ellis fam ily was at Te xas St adium with m o ther Ellis handling th e stop wa tc he s, fath er George t wirling th e wrench es on his son 's Can -Am, an d a cheering section consisting of his wife , little br o th er an d sister, pl us t he fa mily dog taking care of th e vocals. Racing is a shared ex perience in the Ellis family and when Jimmy and his wi fe arrived at the press co nfere nce following Saturday night's events, each was carrying ha lf the victor's collar o f yellow Texas ro ses. For Steve Stackable the Open Class victory was the jackpot payoff o n a gamble. Stackable had spent the previ o us week ex perimenting with his new factory Maico GP 4 00 and last year's 450. Staekable reas oned correctly th at a h olesh o t start o n the field wo uld be the rou te t o the win ner's circle on the tight , narrow indoor co urs e an d bolted the ol d 4 50 to rquer into the new cantilever-shoc ked GP 4 00 frame. The vic tory was swee t b ut it was by no m eans easy , as Stac kabl e su rvived falls and fo ught off th e slash in g onslaughts o f 500 National Champion Jim Weinert, Tony Distefano, and Gary Sernics in every moto . Weiner t, Distefano an d Semics just completed a round of musical motocross mounts while Stackable decided to st ay with his Maico/U.S. Sports sponsorship of the last tw o years. The con fidence of machine fa m iliari ty was a definite facto r in St ackable 's victory. The young Texan was all smiles as he made his way to the penthouse pressbox lad en with flowers an d a bo tt le of champagne. Th e Texas Stadium even t was the first m ajor enc o un te r of th e top Open
