It came in lirst, s e c o n d and th ird overall in the spectacular Parker 400 - running lirst in seven o u t of the twelve classes . What makes the Gold Belt so in va lu a b le to the champions who wear-and win with it. S upe r io r support to prevent back and b ody fati gue e ven du rin g those long , g rueling ru ns . The G old Belt - it's n o wonder they ca ll it the Belt o f Cha mpions! Guest editorials Trials Council rejects 'win money' This I S an open let ter to the trials bike manufacturers concerning support policies fo r factory riders. The impetus for this letter is the massive input received by the North American Trials Council from riders and tr ials fans from allover the co un t ry. We are concerned ab o ut the paying of "win" money by the factories . This practice has deeply offended the majority of people currently involved with the sport for the following reasons: 1. Trials throughout its lo n g history has never pai d a cash purse to winners, i.e , there has never been win money. 2. Trials people have seen the character of other forms of motorcycle sport change drastically and in unpleasant directions when win money was in troduced. 3. Many of the tri als riders now being paid win money have chan ged: th is is obvious to an yone who can co mp are their " b efo re" and " after " behavior. The Co un cil and m ost of th e people who h ave co n tacted us realize th at th e top riders require assistance fro m the fact ories. The consensus is that free or discoun ted bikes, parts, and accessories are acceptable and probably necessary. If the rider is performing as an effective employee by riding the machine well, giving schools, helping riders o r organize rs, e tc . , the n we suggest that you treat hi m as an employee and pay hi m a salary . But please do n ot put your rider un der the unbearable pressure of no win , no m on ey . It m akes it much to o difficul t fo r them to func tio n as gentlemen an d sportsme n. This is esp ecially noticeable in t rials fo r the ride rs and sp ec tato rs are in mu ch closer con tact than in any o the r form of m o t or c y cl e co mp eti tio n . When sponso red riders do n ot be have as gentlemen, it makes th e po te ntial buyers of y ou r produc t angry . We are n ot di scoun ting t he great support and contributions trials bike manufacturers h ave m ade to the sport. We take issue on this single point only one that we feel is imp o rtan t because it can hurt the sp o rt and th at hurts both the manufacturers and all th e rest of us. Wiltz W. Wagner, Jr. for the North Am erican Trials Council Attention racing fathers and mothers Th e new AMA sanctioned testp ro gram at Ascot Park in Gardena is now well unde rway and will run weekl y for most of the year. The program is basically set up for the new rider, run by experienced professional race officials. The track has the bes t safety features of any track in Ame rica. Due to the fact that some false in formati on h as been printed an d voiced I feel th at it is bes t to clarify so me key poin ts abo ut th e show that will develop all-aro und riders in the c omi ng m onths. Th e two classes that we are really in te rested in developing are th e Mini -Cycl e an d th e 125cc. In both of these classes an y rider can enter. There Ame rica n J awa, along wit h an nouncing tha t it is giving contingency money , has bu rst upon the scene wi th a lim ited edition MX bike wit h Bilstein's air/oil shocks.
