The loop wound through the backside of the Rancho Bernardo {,winery area, on private ground near San ~ Diego where, apparently by working a ( co -existence pact with local horsemen , t he tri als riders ' are perfectly welcome. Parts o f the trail passed through grassy .wo o d ed areas that were m ore NorCal ~ than SoCal in character. The traps for the most part were difficult without being dangerous. ; Novices go t a special workout, as their Am/Ex Trap Nine was a case-basher in spots . This was the easy part. scores ranged from winner Scott Parker's 14 to o ur resident t u rkey's 14 1. The Novice traps em phasized lots ' of co nt ro l in tight t urns and off-camber turns, in t erspersed with a co upl e of good loose rock climbs an d so m e prac ti ce a t b oulder-jumping in Novice T rap One. With five hours t o ride four lo op s, there was little time pressure , so riders had pl enty of time to read th e sections an d little reason to motocross the trail betwee n t raps. This is well , because the loop t ra il was go o d trials footage throughout, especiall y th e lo ng d ownhill with two abrup t roc k steps at abo u t mid-slope . Bernie Schreiber (Bul) rode a two point third lo op, putting together a 27 point score to blow away the Expert class. Mark Eggar brought a Honda in next at 46, and Marl and Whaley had to claw his way up to third Expert after a disheartening series of fives early in the trial. Dan Sivadge, whose family co vers tri als, speedway and motocross, beat Papa Dean Pagel by 13 points to take Greg Lersch on the WlfV t o a clean at Trap 19. the Amateur class , while newly-transferred Ra y Soffa, gathering no moss, took third t o be gin accu m ulati ng t ransfe r points all o ver agai n . Bob Nic kelsen (a t ninth Expert) is back on his 125 Honda again . It 's deliberate. Bob says he's setting himself a goal : to tum in th e b est 125cc performance in this year 's AMA National series.
