Greg Wilburn (Ho n) an d Jim Allison (Yam) had a real thing going but co uld n' t ge t t o Avoian , eir semi was almost a full secon d aster than the first . Vin ce Mead (Yam) had set th e fas test ime of t he evening, a quick 1: 15.09 ompared to the other he ats which were n the 1:16's through 1:1 8's but as he won the prev ious week it was the winner line for him . By now th e track had go tten a bit co bby in the north tum ca using a bit of a problem for so me although they escaped really falling. Doug Hannon (Bul) took the lead as th e pac k started sorting themselves out. im Wright (Ya m ) wa s really working trying to get Stev e Fortune (Yam ) who was in sec o nd . It became alm ost a blan ket ra ce wi th the second through fifth positions. On e lap Steve Fortune and Jim Wright were drag racing the straigh t side by sid e as Wrigh t was really going fo r a front sp ot. Greg Wilb urn moved past Fortu ne an d th en Jim Wright was up to sec on d with Vin ce Mead, who'd done a fantastic jo b co ming from th at back row, right on his rear wheel. As th ey ca m e through the north tum on the final lap still led by Doug Hannon, Mead mad e his move and iust ma de it to the flag ah ea d of Wright. The 125 class was down in atten da nc e a bit so it was not necessary to run a semi. Fin ish positions in the two he ats determ in ed starting line positions. Mike Minnig (Yam ) and Wayne Rainey (Hon) each won a heat and for the m ain it was Minnig who took the winner's line. Once agai n it was a blanket race with four of them side by side down the araight, the Yamahas of Eddie Lawson, Rich Delgato and Steve Woskoski all trying to catch Wayne Rainey and his Honda. Mike Minnig was flat hauling from that last starting position, passing Eddie Lawson and going after Rainey. By the end of the race he was nearly up to Rainey 's rear wheel. We wish we co uld give credit to more riders by name but without a fu ll list of entries we can 't. Even the announcer was havi ng his troub les identifying you all but we hop e to get better as the seas o n progresses so bear with us . Wish Mike Minnig co uld see all the differe nt versions of the sp elling of his name we have from the o ffici als! It will be short track again n ext we ek followed by a short track version of Tf raci n g on March 14th. If you haven 't Laverda 10 00 , Eagan ble w up hi s eng ine on the las t lap, just be fore Parriott did the same thin g further down the co urs e. Paul Un ma cht (Lav) won. Immediately foll owing the race, 750 Production runner-up Jeff St eele 's sponsor Dick Pearce became the firs t to claim an award un de r Yoshi m ura Racing's new con tingency program .
