Some guy by the nam e of Don Kessler wrote in to Cycl e News and wanted to kn ow why a " squ id " enduro rider has th e right t o write abou t a race r 's view of Ba rst o w to Veg as . Don , if you think riding enduros makes you a "squid" [ invite you out to a District 3 7 enduro and you can even ride on my minute. What's a "squid" anyway ? [ managed to finish Barstow to Vegas in the top 50 Novices. They gave out bitchen trophies ; I sure like mine. Shamrocks ISOT qualifer I had a chance to ride part of the Shamrocks ISDT qualifier course a co uple of weeks ago. It's a whole lot different than last year's ball buster. The start/finish will be at the Lakeshore Inn in California City. An eas y 25- m ile loop takes you out to th e main pits where two 40-mile loops will be run. The first goes up to Government Peak an d back over fairly eas y terrain , just the same stuff we have ridden m an y times. Nothing tough. The loop go es over by Randsb urg a nd off th e mine tailings, which are just an absolute gas to ride down. 1 didn 't ge t a chance to ride the other loop, but t al king to riders who did, it is a pretty fun loop. Also this year you don 't have to be street legal to run, so that m akes it a lo t easier for desert-racer types to enter. Frankly , after last year's ro ck fest (no t the singing type), I swore I would never try a Shamrock qualifer agai n . After a lo o k at the co urse I relented and sent in my entry . I know I'll never get a gold medal b ut it sure would be n ice to get a silver or at leas t a bronze. I feel the bronze is well within the reach of a competent rider. For o ne thing, t he trials rules don 't penalize you the way enduro rules do. Say you are riding number 10. Well, if y o u are 10 minutes late to a check (y ou co m e in on number 20 ), y o u r new arrival time to the n ext chec k is now 20 , not 10. In other words a tri al is only between ch ec ks, no t over t he whole co urs e. The length of the course is 130 miles a day . The two 4 0 -mil e loops will be run backwards o n Su nday. Write th e Sunland Shamroc ks for info rmati o n, 744 Doan Drive , Burb an k , Californ ia 91506. Date is Mar ch 15 an d 16 . "Bogey" shocks didpt burst upon the motorcycle world wi th a gian t adve rtis ing camp ai gn . They have been adver ti sed m ostly by word of m outh . Friends o ver at Dirt Rider m agazine put me on to th em so me mon th s ago and I p icked u p a pair fo r testin g. Put th em on for th e Ch ec k Chase b ut chose the wrong springs and was going ba in g-ba in g allover th e desert u n til a 11at tire p u t m e out o f the race. My next try ou t (wi th th e proper sp rings) was th e to ugh 125 Mile Checkpoint Na ti onal Jubilee End uro . I had them dialed in, and the bi ke was reall y han dling good. I had moved up the shoc ks for m ore wheel travel so I was in te res ted if th e Bo ges co uld take the added p unish ment. On the secon d lo op , di saster struck. At first I thought the left shoc k had broken bu t the sh aft had unscrewed from the eyelet, losing the spring retainer, as it turned out. Limpin g back into the pits, the stress of running o n one sh oc k broke the swingarm. I wasn't too happy with Boge sh o cks right ' then. Back together with a good dose of Loctite to keep everything from unscrewing and it was Barstow to Vegas time. Everything went well. The shocks performed quite well and kept their damping all the way , eve n through the miles and miles of rough , cab by terrain which is hard on shocks. I passed a lot of bikes th at were out of shape, while the Boges kept m y old sco o t straight. Ne x t run on th em was th e 25 0 Mile Las t Ch an ce En duro. Again the Boge s came th ro ugh right fine with no problems. This enduro was set up with such high speeds it was a virtual Hare and Hound for two days. Ninth overall and fourth in class meant the sh ocks were going to st ay on m y bike for good. One ni ce feature of the Boge shocks is .th at they are completely rebuildable and you can change the d a mping by installing an eas y -t o-change valve . You don't need a special tool, either. A one-inch so cket will take them apart. All things considered, I rate the Boges as the best buy in shocks. Actio n Oil JT Ra cing Imp orts 24 1 W. 35 th St. Suite A National Cit y, CA 92050 If you h ave a Twin-Air filter, this is the oil recommended for it. It is u ni q ue in that they claim it will waterproof foam filters as well as providing dust protection. You have to apply it a little differen tly than you do regular oil, bu t it isn't any harder. I used it on a Filtron and got good results with it. After ap plyin g, th e solvent evaporates, leaving a sticky oil which does the job. It 's more expensive than regular oil but this is not the pl ace to skimp on protection. Roy Sheridan is an enduro rid er who came up with a pr actical so lu tio n. He built himself a tensioner, It worked pretty well and some of his club members asked him to make them one. Now he 's making them for the pu blic an d 1 a m glad to recommend the tensioner, He makes them to bolt rig h t on to Yamahas a nd Huskies. We had to weld o n a mounting bracke t for it to fi t my XL Honda. It works re all y fi ne. I like it mounting on the fram e instead of the swingarm, as some tensioners do . The rubbing block is made of hi gh qu ality n ylon and we ar is very sligh t , even after five m onths o f use. The tensioner h as been on some bik es o ver a year now with no problems. At $15 it 's a bargain . pl ease 2334Newport Blvd., Costa Mesa, CA 9 26 2 7 If y o ur bi ke still comes with those dumb rubber -eovered footpegs , yo u know you have to replace them with clea ted steel type for a sure grip. These replacement pegs bolt righ t on and do the job. My wife 's bike got a set of Circle Industries fo o t pegs and they work j us t fine. The only thing lost was the sprin g-lo ading fe atur e built into the st ock pegs , but she hasn 't co m plain ed . They are well -built and h aven't bent.
