others , was doing so m e very com peten t riding. The third m an in this ra ce was Russ Powell, who apparently had not go tt en wet and mis erabl e en o ugh in the Open event. The effects o f the we ather wer e catastro phic on a good m an y riders wi th less experience. Man y never go t by th e drainage ditch . The off-camber turns were the nemesis of so me wh o just slid down with the movin g mud to th e botto m o f the h ills wh ere th ey sat ex haus ted un til so me sp ec tators wo ul d pu sh them on to solid gro und . On e rider who tried to cross th e ditch at full power went comple tely t hrough a retaining fe nce into a water-filled hole, endin g up under the b ike . The flagm en , orga nizers and m edics were upon him so fast that th ey knocked him bac k under the water just as he was struggling to the surface. One of his res cuers exclaimed: "Damn, I'm so rry, I was just afra id th at you migh t dro wn befo re we could get to y ou !" That's the kind of race it was. But, after all it's winter. • Resul ts in Resul ts Section. Fallon hare and hound By Jim Hershman ' T he first race 0 f the season for H. &H. En terp rises, mo re commonly kn own as the Hornby bro thers of Fallon, Nevada , was held eight mile s south of Fall o n on ne w ground. In this da y o f more land closures , they are to be co mm ended on th eir acquisition . West Motorcycle Sh ow. As it h as been since its inception, it turned out to be the usu al California benefit. Qualifying from time-trials and taking th e fastest 80 riders, 10 heats were set up and run with but one restart, and no more than 12 different riders on th e penalty line (different heats). Seven o f the 11 National numbers who signed up were eliminated. The two Northwest racing chicks, Diane Cox (Expert) and Tammy Sessions Uunior) , were also both out. Cox just plain not qualifying, while Sessions didn't transfer from the heat. Starting the Semis was like trying to start the ec onomy up again - just couldn 't be done. After many false starts , the semis were co mplete and on carne the Trophy Dash . The p ole sitter an d new track record holder (8 seconds flat vs. 8.44 for 19 74 ), Bruce Hanlon, was twice into t he first tu m leading the p ack but restar t was th e name of the game and rest ar ted it was. When finally underway, to a very q uestionable start , Bruce loo ked towards the infield at the officials for some sort of help but none was forthcoming and he finis hed last. D. Robinson (Yam), fro m the wine valley of Napa, California took h ome th e trophy an d the taste from the lips of Miss Heidelberg Beer, Tammy Azar. Into the 20-lap Main went four Experts (three of 'em National numbers), five Juniors , and one lone Novice, with California being represented by nine of th e fin alists. Clearly it was the 19 74 Am eri can Indoor Short Trac k Champion, Dave Hansen (Ho n) , wh o was the de fe nding cham pion of t his very race, b ut wh en he was sen t to , the p en alty line, th e fans became da mn u p'tig h t. Dave 's visions of "the o n ly thi ng different will be the date on th e winner's check" went up in sm o ke and he was j oine d there by fellow front-rowers S. Foster (Bul) and D. Perri (Yam), With J ohn Gennai (Bul) and th e terror o f t he in doors, Rick Hoc king (Ya m) t he only t wo left on the fro nt row to do battl e for honors of firs t into tum one, it was simple as to who would run away with th e win . Right? Wrong ! Somehow Gennai read the star tin g flag perfectly, st ay ed in side , gave nothing, became race leader an d even tu al winner , making it loo k awfully easy. Foster and Hansen came slowly through the pack to finish fourth an d sixth respectively, while Den nis Robinson made his wa y forward from his second row star t to close on the leaders. With Gennai in command, the fact is nei ther Hoc king or Robinson ca me any closer to winning this Main than Bing Crosby. • Result s in Results Section.
