In the first ca se, cons ider doing noth in g to your stock rear susp ension set-up so far as geo metry or incre asing rear ax le travel is co nerned. On t he mo to cr oss bike used as a test be d for th is. project, rear wheel tr avel me asured 3.5 in ches with the st andard 13 -inc h sh oc ks bolted up . The least expensive thing y o u ca n do is buy an d mou nt so me springs ' that are m at ch ed to yo u an d your bi ke's all-up weight. You 'd be ' amazed and horr ified h o w seldom th e springs that arrive o n bikes . in the showroom are really tuned to your rid ing requirements. Mo st of th em are far too stiff; so m e ar e too so ft and already co il-binding w hen you just sit o n the bi ke . It sometim es seems lik e all the m anu facturers go t a deal o n sh ock springs from the old BSA Roc ket Three 750 and, li ke most road bike co ils, t hey're too stiff for most of us in m ost of o ur trail riding. Yama ha Thermal- Flo ws and sto ck CZ da mp ers are only two examples th at be nefit im m edi ately and no ticeably fro m being m atch ed wit h sp rings of the correct lb ./in . rate. Co rrec t springs m ay provide enou gh imp rovemen t in ha n dling to satisfy your skills and n eeds. The cost of t his . " m o dificatio n " is $ 10-15 with $ 12 for a set of 75 lb ./i n. sprin gs bei ng fairly co mmon. Mos t dampers have th ree or th ree and a ha lf inc hes of p iston and shaft travel.
