Santa M aria, CA 93454 Call us for info on Spillway Par k Racing By Jan Newman BEND, ORE.,JAN. 26 Getting here at all through the snow. and slush was a challenge. It was almost an insult to be told "You shoulda been here yesterday when it was over 50 and the sun was . shining." The snow covering the track looked a lot worse than it turned out to be. The gro und below was soft and not too wet - unlike the last time arou nd. Traction was really neat. The track has been changed a bit, too. The sweeper has been taken ou t and a series of tight turns have been put in its place. Also, the wide comer back in the woods has been changed to a dog-sled. The two 100 Juniors rode with the Turkeys an d Bill Bolland (Hon) was first . Ray Le Rogue (Hus) sorted out a Turkey trophy in a real mixing of the troops. Ted Walker won the first moto and third overall on his new Mon tesa in his first race ever. His father, Jim, rode behind him for the most pan on a Bultaco, Rick Burger (Hon) looked good out in front of the 250 J unior /In termedia te race. A spill in the first moto was the only flaw . Dave PrJain (Mai) got by for the win on that one. Gary Dimeo (Bul) ran away with the Junior honors. All Ex perts rode together wi th the one-two-fives scored separately . Randy Limbeck hu ng right u p in th e top five or so with his 125 Powroll Honda to take top small-bore money. Barney Newman (Mon) won two and struggled to a second with a broken shifter in the third fo r first Open. Rod Ken tn er was back on his 360 Monoshock for the final win and second overall. • Results in Results Section. Whe n it was allover, Gary Potts, Rick Benek, and Russell Roberts had taken home the prize money in the 125, 250, and Open Pro races. Buck Murphy started off by taking his Bultaco to an immediate 125 Pro lead. Murphy easily p ulled away from second place man Steve Nolen in the early going, but mechanical troubles sidelined him after three laps. Nolen then rode the Rowland Specialties-prepped Honda for the rest of the race in a secure first place - until a gear box fail ure o n the last lap dropped him to sixth at the finish. Gary Potts (Hus), too k the lead and held it to the finish. Second heat was much the same, with Murphy lasting only two laps after building up an incredible lead. This time No len was leading after the final lap as well as before. Pott's first mo to win and second heat fifth place gave him the overall, with Nolen in second and John Hales, with a fifth and second was next. 250 Pro was an easy win for RickS Benek, after pre-race . favor ite Mitchell Simmons had seve re mechanical ~ problems in the second heat. Simmons l led the first moto from start-to-finish, with Benek close behind. Simmons also I got the jump on the start of the second moto, before stalling coming out of the last tum. He had almost caught back up to Benek when another stall dropped hi m back to fo urth in heat and second overall. ( Open Pro was just p lain excitement, most of it provided by Puyallup's own 1 Bob Boock. Riding a new Yamaha 40 0, Boock fell to second on the start behind 1 Hugh Walters. Boock challenged the 1 Penton rider at the hairpin but stalled, falling back to third. He charged back past Russell Roberts and agai n tried to challenge Walters, but again a stall ended the challenge. This p u t Roberts in pe rfect p osit ion to inherit the lead when Walters lost power, a lea d he he ld to the finish. Boock eventually finished second, with Walters t hird. And that was just the first moto! Second m o to was Roberts taking an immediate lead, with the hairpin agai n being Booc k's nem isis. A seco nd-lap tumble just barely knocked him out of the chase, an d he finished a distant second. Butch Waymire was third behind Roberts and Boock; with Randy McAllister fourth .
