Staten buries Croft By John Bethea CARLSBAD, CAL., FEB. 9 Tempers flared in th e 50 0cc Pro class tod ay at Carlsbad Racew ay under steady dri zzlin g skies and d ouble winner Rex Staten (Mai] visibly go t the sho rt end o f the tussle, sporting a sw ollen bl ack eye. The two involved were Staten and Mike Yorba. who was o ut today on a CZ since his Maico was stolen fro m the Wheelsmith Engineering shop earlier in th e wee k. In the first 500 m o to , S taten was attem p ting t o lap Yo rba, wh o is goi n g after CMC Nu mber One this year, and co ul dn ' t ge t by . That st arted th in gs. Before they sta rt ed th e secon d ro u nd, Re x pulled o ff th e grid for a practice start and sp rayed Mike with mud, "Acclden tal lv ," he stated . Whe n he returned to the grid , a heated Yorb a h ad a few m or e words with Rex. The race sta rted an d into it, Re x again cam e up on Yorba for ano ther lapping job.
