Aha, Six Days! ISDT is, as they say, what's happening now in the U.S .A. And, probably, what is going to continue to happen. It wouldn't be at all surprising to see that the many-pocketed nylon riding jacket and cleated sole boots become in 1975 what the rugby shirt and plastic mouthguard were in 1973 : symbols of where motorcycle competition and, hence, the would-be competitors are really at . It is impossible to ignore the numbers of Penton/KTMs running around with lighting kits on them. But to earn a gold medal in a Two-Day Qualifying Trial or a Six Days real thing, you cannot ride like you were in an enduro. The American qualifiers have been called by expert riders not given to exaggeration, "two day-long motocross," What it takes to ride an event like this is a motocross bike that will last through a two, or three, or six day race - with the lights still working at the finish - while not making much noise about it. As you might expect, the European factories th at make " o torcycl es make m factory motorcycles for their wo rks riders to ride in these trials. They are very refined, very q uick, very precise-handling works bikes intended for maximum speed over terrible te rrain including water, mud, rock, and threading between trees. They also should be re asonably quick on the street. Unsurprisingly , there is also a whole set of enduro and trail riders who imagine th a t if onl y they could ha ve so me of th at factory equipment, why, they'd show they were just as good as ... etc., etc. Now, European factories would rather sell wha t they race both out of a sense of correctness and because it's easier to build one kind of motorcycle. Jim Pomeroy always maintained th at the Spanish didn 't know how to de-tune a bike so yo u always received it pretty close to full rac e spec s. At least, you only need o ne set o f blueprints that way. And so , would-be Malcolm Smiths of the world, the European factories have gone away muttering, "If that's what they want . . . " and today you have access to the factory equipment for the most demanding man-machine motorcycle co mpet it io n we know about: two to six days trial. ISOT works bikes are he re. " It seems like KTM/ Pen to n got to these shores with a 250 first. The crafty Austrians went through about three design changes before the American public caught on to what was happening. Husqvarna had limited quantities of their 250 WR and 400 WR so-called "enduros" avail able late last year. Enduro, hell, they 're racers. This
