Even " Parachute ridge, " the club 's piece de resistance turned o u t to be a Piece de cake because it was dry an d .the riders were ab le to use their brakes. So me riders were even he ard to be hollering such demonic phase s of deli gh t as " Hot Dog!" and "Wheee !" as th ey go t to the bottom sti ll upright an d go ing · merely 50 m h or so , p ins tead of landing in a co n fused heap as intended. Sin ce the club had really not exp ec te d anyone to easily follow th eir route they posted avera ges th at were fairly reasonable, mostly 18 and 20 m iles per ho ur, and most of their chec ks (five ou t of seven) were on th e second half of the route, whi ch few we re expected to find at all. Alas, most riders not on ly found the route but were able to keep the schedules an d co mple te the course with little loss of points. The club , disgusted with the whole affair, in a fit o f pique computed th e results on the sp o t and awarded the trophies. An y resp ectable club wo uld have been able to del ay awa rdi ng trophies by at least a mon th to give the riders a chance to · fo rget the run co m pl etely before being told they had won an ything, b ut b y t his time th e Sierra En d uroers were resigned to the fa" t th at the riders were goi ng to have a go od time regardless, and th ey didn 't see m incli ne d to figh t it any longer. • Results OVERALL: H er she l! After this well -in tentioned but obviously sic k so u l was th rough, any college kid on a Honda 90 co uld have followed the co urse. It was really quite sad. As thin gs stood , at th at point in time, it seemed th at course wo uld be by everyone to the co mp leted everl asting shame and disgrace o f th e club. Then at the last moment th ey were saved by a plagu e-carrying member o f the nach t wer m in (German fo r jeep ers] tribe . Then Zab rt rem o ved h imsel f from th e pack a nd set h is sigh ts o n Lopez. Un fo rtu nately fo r Lopez. h is rear brake arm dislo ca ted , causing him to lose th e use of his rear bra ke. Th us handiapped, Lopez could not h old off Zahrt as h e won th e m oto. Th e second mo ta aga in saw Lopez nab th e lead with Zabrt not far behind.
