Peterson SUNl\'YMEAD , CAL.,jAN. 12 The first climb o f 1975 brought fine weather and a changed h ill to face the climbers who came to start earning the new seaso n's po ints fo r both DeAn za Cycle Par k and Sad dle back Hillcl im bers' Association. Mini class winner Steve Stith starte d th e season with a record h igh fo r minis, an amazing 220 fee t. The hill, a 600 foot stre tch of ru gged terrain and brush covere d te rraces, was almost co nq uered by a 250 whe n Ian Nascimen to po wered his Yamaha to th e 530 fo o t mark . It d idn't fa ll, h owever, until the 360 Class came around and Bill Estes broke over the crest on his Husky. From th at point o n, eigh t bikes . managed to top the ch allenging grade. Now the reall y exciting co m p etiti o n began, with the starting point moved to the abrupt bas e of the hill. Four thumpers and fo ur two strokes were waiting to meet the challenge. The 750 class fell to Ed Sh aver b y go ing over from this point. With all class winners decided, tw o riders were still in co n ten tio n for the top eliminator troph y. The starting point was once again advanced. Ed Shaver, o n a highly modified fuel burning 750 Triumph faced o ff against Kerry Peterson on a stock 400 Maico, Peterso n was going fo r his third co nsec u tive t op win. From high on th e hill, just ge tting started was ne arly impossib le. Peterson revved the engine a nd b egan inching h is way up th e hill, but was halted at the 110 foot ma rk. Shaver then came to the line to try to better the footage, bu t co uld only make h is mach in e cli m b to th e 95 foot ma r k. Eac h rid er mad e o ne more attempt at t he hill foll o win g rapid gea r changes. T h is t ime Kerry powe re d the Maico over the lo p wit h a roar of astonishmen t co mi n g from th e crowd . Ed, with a gallant effort, knew it was do or die, and he throttled th e T riu mph to the 400 fo ot mar k where it ca m e t o a halL _ Results in Results Section .
