Croft , who last w ee k failed miserably in his firs t factory outing, went home the u nd ispu ted star of th e day against t he two Na t ional ch ampions in a tte n da nce . T omm y , ( for m e r Fran ks-proto racer) tied th e Nat io nal 125cc Champ Mar t y Smith on points for th e ligh tw eigh t vic to ry, but was ousted fro m th e top slot- wh en Sm ith won th e fin al even t. An d Marty mad e it tigh t, crashing in the first mota in the seco nd t um and re mounting th ird fr om last to finish second . In the final, Smith again cras hed and later to ssed a chain yet still emerged th e vic to r. When th e 250ec Pros began, it quickly developed in to a battle b etween Croft , Mosier, Billy Payne and Rich Grafton. Payne sp un o ut o n th e th ird lap and left Croft and Mosier in a dice th at lasted no t o nly to th e fin ish of th e first m o ta but th ro ughout th e entire second! The lead changed 10 times in th e t wo motos wi th Gay lon takin g th e win in th e first event and Croft th e seco nd. Croft lost th e first event when he tried an in sid e pas s on Ne lso n White hill (C-A) in the final tu m of the last lap but . was stymied. Gaylon, m eanwhile , chose the outsid e, found th e line and nipped Tommy by a b ike length at the finish . In the finale , Gay lon again attemp ted a pass in th e final turn , pulled alo ngs ide and lost a t th e checkered by a mere four fe et, Said o ne spectato r, a relative of o ne best in th e co untry t " I' ve seen a of great ma ny Na tionals, maybe 25, and th at 25 0 was by far th e be st I've ever seen. Period. " . Back on Maico for th e fir st time in over a year, an d after a two weeks vacation, Rex Staten showed his old prowess by bestin!l the 500ec Pro class over Sherman (Mai), Wein er t (Yam ) an d Stac kab le (Kaw) . Sh erman, wh o has domin ated CMC at Saddleback in the past tw o month s, pounced upo n the error for second o verall. Steve Stackabl e, th e Texan ace who co pped cro wd -favo rite h o no rs at th e Kn ievel Snak e River Motocross, was flow n o ut by Kawasaki fo r a test ride and managed to look' strong er lap by lap whil e earn ing " fo urth.
