The manage to find a few sandwashes that had been cleaned out by the first winte r rains, and those were liked by everyone. Once th e course got up to wa rd s Cuddeback, however, th e Buzzards used quite a lo t of last we ek 's trail. 1 heard a fe w complaints a bou t bad markings out on th e back sid e of t he co urs e . However, out o f th e 4 67 riders e nte re d , alm o st 375 o f the m found their wa y well enough to ge t a finisher's p in . Th e bomb run was long a nd it took quit e a whil e b efore the lea der, TDm Br o o k s , ca me b y . Dave LaP rai k co n verge d from a diffe rent trail th an Brooks a nd dropped on to the co urse second overall with Randy Flemin g right behind h im . Running abo ut fift h o ve rall at the bomb was Andy Kirker on his Can-Am. First Amateur to the bomb wa s Dann y Willia ms o n his 125 Honda, trying to pass Kirker. Mike Anderson was the firs t Novice to th e bomb on his Bultaco , Tom Kelly , who has b een dominat in g the 125 Novice class, was running sec ond, with Tom McGurk running th ird . Out on th e firs t loop, quit e a fe w changes took pl a ce. T om Brooks quit somewhere p ast the bomb for a n unknown reason. (I heard it was because he got too cold.] Duane Carter made the first 10Dp in 58 minutes and led the pac k thro ugh the pits on his Yamaha. Running second thro ugh the pits wa s Dan Da w son, on his way to his first overall win . Benny Padilla was the third o ne th ro ugh, and second 250 Expert. Bill Friant was the first 175 Expert at six th overa ll. First Amateur was JDhn Taylor with Larry Roe sel er a nd Bob Rutten b ehind h im a nd no m o re th an 10 yards a part in the race fo r first Trail Expert , Mark Ha rr is, who was ru n ni ng abo ut l 5th at t he b omb, worked his way up to first Novice, then spen t 10 minutes in the Four Aces pits, try ing to fix a sheared swingarm bolt. Finally , in de sp era tion , Mar k cro ssthread ed the bolt a nd to ok off h opin g it would hold. Mik e Anderson ca m e through and pas sed Mar k , with Tom Kelly runn ing .... o threw the last race of 1974. feelings about Buzzards did th ird overall, first 175 Novice, right be hind h im . Out on the seco nd loop, t he to p 10 riders di d some mo re passing. Dan Dawson was first overall, which should make Mission Hill s Motorcycles, hi s sponsor, very happy. Duane Carte r lost his lead so m e wh ere o n the second lo op and h ad to se t t le fo r third o verall . By this time the fin ish line was quit e crowded be cause of th e Grand Pri x fin ish, and getting n um bers was p re tt y co n fusing. Dave La Praik was fourt h , netting h im one of h is best finishes this yea r. Bill Friant was the next red-plate in, w ith J im m y Brown behind him. Larry Ro cselcr and Bob R u t ten fin ished no mo re than 20 yards apart , after battling for the first and second lo o p . Larry got by Bob in the last co rne r before the chec kere d flag , en ding th e closest race of the day. After losi ng th o se 10 minut es in th e pits, Mark Harris wo rked his wa y bac k up, earning himself a well-des erv ed firs t 250 Novi ce tro p hy . George Winterburn fini sh ed s e cond overall , fi rst Heavyweigh t, with Stan Bennett a nd Tom McGurk (250s) finishing next. Bill Warren was fo urth with Mik e ·And erso n and Mark Przibrowski finishing just in front of second He avyweigh t, Larry Underwood. Paul Baker won the Divisi on Two Novi ce class, with Duane Ridgeman topping the Trail Novi ces . I saw J ac k Froelich, "th e Trailbike Steward a fte r the ra ce, a nd he and Ron Hall, the Divis io n T wo Steward, have so me near ties in th eir classes. Froe lic h said n o mo re th an 10 po ints sep ara tes Larry Roeseler a nd Bruce Ogil vie fo r th e n um ber one pla t e , a nd de pe nding o n the entries of the las t co u ple of races, either o ne co uld have it. I left Ro n Hall standing at the finish, waiting to see if TIm Bo wman would be towed through.
