completely from t he forests. T wo years ago there were fo ur or five forest end ure s. Last year there were only two. This year. o nl y the wan, consu m p tive ghost of th e Hi Mo un tai n rem ains. The BLM is poli t ely mo vin g us in to smaller and smaller areas, producin g revision up on re vision o f th eir ORV management pla n, crea tin g th e fu tu re by subt le changes in th e h ist o ry of th e past. It might be co mforting in a we ird sort of w ay , to th ink that so meo ne in th e B1..\1 h ad so me sort o f Machiavellian vision o f the future in to which we were bei ng mold ed, b ut 1 can't eve n se e this. Go ad ed into a lumbering stam ped e by Nixon's Exec u ti ve Order cattle prod, th e mindless herd o f BLM b ureaucra ts will run, driving us in fro nt of them , un til their funds are exhausted . God alone knows wh at fragil e righ ts will be trampled under th eir clu msy hooves. 'Ib is year has seen th e herd frightened by lightning from th e boob tube and terrorized by the timeless tra cks of a spook named Patton. They shy from the thorns of Crucifixion cact us, but run roughshod over us because we have no tho rns. Some of those in the lumbering b u re aucracy see u s as fo od , nourish m ent, fuel for the ru n ning beast. Wi th c1earsightedness born of a vor acio us appetite, those would rather we w er e not destroyed, but instead were fenced an d harvested yearly. But the vario us stingi ng insects of organizations like the Sie r ra Cl ub and the Environmental Defense Fund seem unable to tolerate this symbiotic relationship. They would drive and madden the BLM beasts until they have trampled even their so urce of life into the dust. Then as th e beasts slow and drop in their tracks, the insects will inherit the land, so they think. I think the land developers will ge ~ it. The battle for land is an evolutio nary one. Th e ' fi ttest will survive. We are in th e process o f b eing ph ased o u t like th e dodo bird because we ar e unwill ing to defend o urselves o n the ground, in th e co urts , o r in th e p ress. Perhaps there is no defense, and we should be phased o ut . I d on't kno w, and I d on't thin k anyo ne is ever goi ng t o kn ow be cause our rout is virtually com ple te th is y ea r and no t a sh ot has b een fir ed in o ur defense. Th e Barstow-to-Vegas race was th e last o f the gre a t Har e and Hounds. With the publicity th at it received, this year, it is inco nceivab le th at it will be allowed to run nex t year. The final destination o f the BLM and its hapless charges lies beyond the mirror where th e Red Queen named J . Russel Penny presid es. UNo, no," said th e Queen, "Sentence firs t, verdict a fterward . " .. . " Think before you speak a n d writ e i t d own afterward." . .. "Queens never m ake bargains." Lew is Carro ll knew all abo u t Penny , but unfortunately his sol ution have Alice wake up, wh ile the Queen remained flo ating in a tureen of turtle soup - has little application for us. Imagin e the upro ar from the co nservatio nists if we made enough turtle soup to contain Penny and his ego. Presents from the Gambit bag Thanks . .. To Ron Burpo and the ORA for setting a new standard in desert racing. I hav e not a ttended one of his events but I heard more favorable comments about his races than I have about anything else recently. Thanks • . • To the Pasadena Fire Department and Ron Vincellette for the benefit they staged for the Burn Ward. Thanks . . . To Robert Pirsig for "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. " Thanks . .. To CERA North for the ride I most enjoy every year. Thanks . . . To President Jerry Ford for replacing Nixon in such a way that he can be proud of you. Thanks ... To the Government for nothing, which is what we will probably be ea ting this time next year. In all there doesn't seem to be that much to be happy ab out th is year, but at least th e war h as wound down a bit , Nixon's gone and we're still riding, fo r th e moment a t least. One moment at a time and th e blind fa ith to leap to the next o ne are all an yo ne can as k. Assuming it exists, Happy New Year.
