By John Bethea ORANG E, CAL., D EC. 15 Marty Sm ith sho wed up for a race about as ill-prepared as he has ever been and it cos t him th e overall 125 cc Pro class victo ry to th e giant- killing yo ung Tomm y Cro ft at Saddleb ack Park Sunday. Sm i th, t he National MX Champ, co uld n 't get a fac tory. prepared rid e from his Honda sponso rs so he h ad to put to geth er a last m inute m a ch ine w h i ch w a s o b vi o us ly underpowered and under-prepared. It just didn 't h ave the stea m, especially in the final moto when Marty's expansion chamber broke off. Yet his talent helped him hang on to third overall. In contrast to Smith's troubles was Croft's stellar showing. Croft won both the 125cc and the 250cc Pro events overall against a h uge field of nearly 30 riders per class, making h im the hottest rider on the West Coast. Tommy (Fra) wo n the first mo to in eac h class, then settled back a nd held off his closest rivals in the next rounds to etch the triumph next to h is nam e. In the 125 it was Bru ce McDougal (Hon) who was prime contender with his victory in the final mo to. But a fourth in round one held him at ba y, whereas Smith finished with a 3-6 in th ird. The 250cc Pro was a brilliant contest in the ini tial faceoff with Ray Topham (Mai) holding the lead until the midway point of th e fin al lap wh en Croft snuck by. Tommy had been working up slowly fro m about seventh when he made the kill. Morris Malone [Mai] , a hot and co ld rider this past year , was hot today and stashed away second spot overall thanks mainly to a win in the final race. And Bob Elliott (Hus) , who has spent ju st about e a c h weekend in the las t few months getting better and faster, fought hard from behind to secure third overall with a fourth in the las t event. Lu ke Messer (Mai), usually a top runner, saw his hopes for a 500cc Pro victory das hed early when his fro nt brake loc ked up soli d off a jump sending him tumbling to the gro und in th e first race. Then while again near the front in the next ro und, he wa tch ed gri mly as his rear shock came off, des troying his suspension. It all left Doug Sherman (Mai) as the co nq uering h ero again , sweep ing both mo tos . His seco nd, by abo u t five seconds , is deceptive as at one point. with about four lap s rem aining, he led by so me 29 seconds. He then got the wo rd to cool it the rest of the race and cool it he did, losing as much as 10 seconds of h is lead ove r Bill Rubly (Mai) in o ne lap. Rub ly , with two seconds, was the runnerup rider whi le Ge ne Ma rtin (Mai), rid in g a bo u t as te nacio us ly as we 've seen h im this ye ar. grabbed up th ird plac e buck s with a p air of th e tre ys. Sh erm an's win was his second in a row at th e st art o f th e 19 75 CMC poin ts seaso n an d if it is any indication , they leave him on top of th e po ints race with a pe r fect to ta l of 80. Croft is currently seco nd with 79. And nex t year's Number One Mike Bell? Well, h e took a fo urth in the 125cc Pros bu t got a bigger bo nus during th e d ay fro m the CMC as he pic ked up his money for a bra nd ne w van, his co nti nge ncy for winning the Ch ampionsh ip th is year. • Nogu ch i's exclusi ve " m itra-t hin ' stai nless steel peta ls pr ovide im prov ed torq ue and more RPM.
