The chorus line. Bob Nickelsen and Martin Belair model new Bell trials helmet. Lane Leavitt's head-dearing exercises. Oooh ! He's going to dab ! An Anglian in the rough . This year, an estim ated 150 0 people were stru ng o ut among t he 28 sections to watch the riders do their thing. The organizers bypassed "Big Chicken Hill" this time , but several traps bore picturesque names like "Red's Sand Box" (Beg/Nov eight), "Movie Star Rocks" (Exper t Five, where Suzuki 's film crew shot some trials footage earlier this year), "Rick's Rocky Revenge" and "Snakeskin." Expert 18-19 had no name, and probably didn 't need one, it made its own reputation. At the riders. ' meethig presentation, Debbie Evans was this year's recipient of the Jim Wilson Outstanding Youth Rider award, presented along with a kiss by previous h older Bernie Schreiber. Next up was th e trophy for ATA's Number One Expert, presented to Bernie Schreiber by 1974 Champion Marland Whal ey. No kiss. Marland also had to give up his California North -South State Championship trophy to Lane Leavitt . Early scoring had Leavitt well ahead after the regulation three loo!?s of 8-10-4, amid protests (disallowed) that he'd run sections out of sequence. Bern ie and Marland were loc ked in a t ie for second at 34 points each, with Mark Eggar nex t at 41. Derrek Bernard had cleaned the entire Kids "A" loop to win tha t class, an d Mike Obermeyer (an RMTA Expert ridi ng fo r Cycle World?) waxed the press/industry contingent. It wasn 't over, yet. The Experts then rode four circ uits of four spectacular exhibi tion sections bef ore sh o u ld e r -t o -sh ould er galleries th at would rival Arnie's Anny. Leavitt stretched his lead, while Mark Eggar , with a determined effort, put together rides o f 1-0-2-0 to forge into seco nd. His progress through Trap Three , with its do ub le rock steps and n asty loose scrabble climbout, was like quic ksilver . He and that Honda we re really getting together. Bernie Sch reiber p icked up a couple of points on an earlier sco rer's error and "fived U Trap Three twice to slip to fourth behind Marland Whaley. With the hard core ac tion over, m ost st ayed around for the drawing, since two of the prizes were a 350 Sh erpa T fro m Bultaco Services, and a th ree-rail Tu m b lewee d trailer from T .H. E. Company. Doreen Dawes' tic ke t go t th e bike to ad d to the family stable, and Jon Fish Oeff's Dad ) got th e trailer. A pai r of Heckel boots and a Bultaco jersey wen t to Roger Graham , who rides nearly everyth ing else; Ray Luna, J r. go t a pair of Du nlop b oots ; an d the last pri ze s in th e drawing, two pairs of Rawh ide Par k b ikini panties, went to Bob Lindquist and Gary !.~:;ianc. Wooee. Keith Pagel , recent graduate fro m Kids "A" in to the Novice class (h e stands about four feet in h is trials boots) was happy with his thild. He said his worst section was Nov-Am Three (a .lo ng traverse of rock steps and ledges with some slick mud for spice), "but I cleaned it the last time around." Lane Leavitt was expansive and relaxed in the paddock. When someone asked why the shocks on his extensively drilled-out Bultaco were upside down, he said, "Well, the bike's usually upside down more than it is right side up, so I thought they'd work better that way." He also said he went into this trial especially mellow. "Maybe I ough t to get drunk the night before every trial. I was feeling no cares at all." Hmmm. After that bit about the shocks, do you think we ough t to believe him? • Results in Results Section. Results EX PERT: 1. Lane Lea vitt (B ul ) . 2. M ark Eggar (H o n ) , 3.
